8-month-old boy died after his mother, who texted her boyfriend the “boy won’t be here much longer”, drowned him to death just because he was interrupting her bath; mother sentenced

Minnesota – In a disturbing case in Minnesota, a 21-year-old mother, identified as E. Harding, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term for the murder of her infant son, an act that has shocked the community and highlighted disturbing aspects of parental neglect and influence.

On February 28, 2024, Harding committed an unthinkable act against her 8-month-old son, identified as Mateo. According to police reports, Harding drowned her son in a hotel bathroom because his crying was interrupting her bath. This horrific act was preceded by a series of texts to her 19-year-old boyfriend, identified as E. Trudeau, in which she expressed frustration over her inability to sleep due to the baby’s crying, indicating a looming threat to the child’s safety. One of her messages starkly warned, “he doing too much rn, I can’t sleep, Im trying tho, Im about to do something bad, Please answer me, He won’t be here much longer.”

Instead of dissuading her, Trudeau’s responses lacked any urgency or concern for the baby’s wellbeing. His replies included, “Ok that’s ok,” and after Harding informed him that Mateo was dead and she was sorry, he coldly responded, “Don’t be.”

Following the murder, Trudeau joined Harding at the hotel, where he discovered the deceased baby in the bathroom. Shockingly, instead of calling for help, the couple engaged in intimate acts before Harding ultimately disposed of her son’s body. She chillingly admitted to packing Mateo’s body in a backpack and discarding it in a dumpster. She also told authorities she was fully aware she was going behind bars because she killed her own baby, acknowledging her awareness of the impending consequences for her actions.

The legal system moved swiftly in response to this atrocious crime. Harding was charged with second-degree intentional murder and was sentenced earlier this week, on Thursday, to 32 years in prison. Her remorseless actions and the manner in which she handled the aftermath of her son’s death painted a grim picture of her priorities and mental state.

Trudeau, complicit in the aftermath and failing to prevent the tragedy, faced charges of aiding an offender — accomplice after the fact. Under his plea deal, his sentence is capped at seven years and two months, significantly less than Harding’s. His sentencing is scheduled for May 5, where he will face the consequences of his actions and inaction.

This case has deeply affected the community, stirring discussions about mental health, parental responsibility, and the social systems in place to protect vulnerable children. The sentences handed down reflect the severity of the crime and the roles each individual played in the tragic death of young Mateo.

As the community mourns the loss of an innocent life, there is a renewed call for vigilance in monitoring distress signals within families and ensuring that children are protected from harm. This tragic story serves as a stark reminder of the devastating outcomes that can arise from neglect and the critical need for intervention in situations where children’s welfare is at risk.
