Mosquito spraying scheduled in Dallas following West Nile virus detection in local samples

Dallas, Texas – In response to mosquito samples testing positive for the West Nile Virus, the City of Dallas has announced targeted mosquito control measures, including scheduled spraying in a specific neighborhood. Weather permitting, the mosquito control spraying will take place between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. on the nights of Tuesday, July 1st and Wednesday, July 2nd.

The area targeted for spraying includes a neighborhood in ZIP code 75215 within Council District 7. The zone is generally bounded by S. Malcolm X Boulevard to the north, Coombs Street to the west, Dathe Street to the east, and Cleveland Street to the south.

Although the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved the insecticide used for treatment, city officials are advising residents in the spraying area to take precautions. Those living in the zone should remain indoors during spraying hours to avoid exposure. Anyone inside a vehicle should keep windows rolled up and the air conditioner running until the spray trucks have passed and the fog is no longer visible. If a person does come into contact with the spray, they are encouraged to wash the exposed area thoroughly with soap and water. The insecticide used breaks down quickly in sunlight and does not leave behind a lasting residue.

Mosquito Bite Prevention Encouraged

In light of the positive West Nile detection, Dallas residents are being urged to take extra precautions to prevent mosquito bites, especially during the evening and nighttime hours when mosquitoes are most active. Those spending time outdoors should wear long sleeves and pants and use an EPA-approved mosquito repellent to reduce the risk of infection.

Eliminate Mosquito Breeding Sites

In addition to avoiding bites, residents can also play a key role in preventing the spread of West Nile Virus by eliminating standing water, which serves as breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Problem areas may include:

  • Unclean swimming pools

  • Stagnant ponds

  • Birdbaths

  • Pet dishes

  • Potted plant trays

  • Old tires

  • Toys left outside

  • Clogged rain gutters and French drains

Mosquitoes can mature from egg to adult in as little as seven days, so it’s important to regularly check and empty water-holding containers.

The City of Dallas is also distributing free mosquito dunks while supplies last. These are available at Code Compliance Services District Offices, including:

  • 3112 Canton St. – 214-670-5708

  • 7901 Goforth Rd. – 214-670-9703

  • 2721 Municipal St. – 214-671-0978

  • 320 East Jefferson Blvd. – 214-948-4587

  • 4230 W. Illinois Ave. – 214-670-6860

  • 9803 Harry Hines Blvd. – 214-670-9713

Residents noticing standing water or other mosquito issues are encouraged to call 3-1-1. To be added to the Do Not Spray list, Dallas residents can also contact 3-1-1.
