Major weekend closure and long-term street shutdowns begin for I-30 Canyon Project in downtown Dallas

Dallas, Texas – All lanes of Interstate 30 between I-35E and I-45/US 75 will be fully closed beginning at 10:00 p.m. Friday, January 16 through 5:00 a.m. Monday, January 19, 2026, weather permitting. The closure is part of the ongoing $888 million I-30 Canyon Project, a long-term infrastructure effort to improve safety, mobility, and roadway longevity in the heart of Dallas.

Detours and Expected Travel Delays

To accommodate the weekend shutdown, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will post a signed detour directing traffic to SH 366 (Woodall Rodgers Freeway), serving as the temporary east–west connection. However, significant delays are anticipated, and drivers are strongly encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel in the area or plan for extra travel time.

TxDOT also indicated that another weekend closure may occur later this month, though additional details will be announced as planning progresses.

Extended Closures and Lane Reductions Impacting Downtown Streets

In addition to the I-30 weekend closure, several key streets in downtown Dallas will face long-term shutdowns and lane reductions beginning mid-January as part of the same project:

  • Cesar Chavez Boulevard: Will be fully closed at I-30 starting January 12, 2026, and will remain shut down through late 2028.

  • Cadiz Street: Set to be fully closed at I-30 beginning January 13, 2026, to allow reconstruction on a new alignment.

  • Akard Street: Will be fully closed at I-30 from January 13, 2026, through summer 2028.

  • Good Latimer Expressway: Will be reduced to one lane in each direction through early 2028.

“No pedestrian access will be allowed within the closed work zones. Signed detours will be posted for all affected streets.”

Project Scope and Goals

The I-30 Canyon Project, with an estimated cost of $888 million, spans the area between the I-35E and I-45 interchanges. Once completed—expected by late 2030, weather permitting—the project will improve travel efficiency, strengthen downtown infrastructure, and enhance long-term safety throughout the corridor.

As work continues, TxDOT urges commuters and residents to stay updated on closures and travel advisories through official channels. The coming years will bring major changes to downtown traffic patterns, but these temporary inconveniences are paving the way for a more modern and connected Dallas.
