City of Fort Worth adjusts waste collection schedule and offers free extra garbage pickup after Thanksgiving

Fort Worth, Texas – With Thanksgiving just around the corner and many Fort Worth residents preparing to host large gatherings, the City of Fort Worth is making seasonal accommodations for extra trash disposal. Recognizing the additional waste that comes with festive meals and celebrations, city officials are allowing each household to set out two extra bags of garbage alongside their standard brown garbage cart — at no extra charge — during the first scheduled pickup following Thanksgiving.
The two permitted extra bags must be standard 32-gallon kitchen-size trash bags and should be placed on the curb next to the regular cart on the designated collection day. This special allowance is only valid on a household’s first scheduled pickup after Thanksgiving, helping residents manage the holiday cleanup without overloading their bins or incurring additional fees.
Thanksgiving Week Schedule Changes
In observance of the holiday, there will be no garbage, recycling, yard waste, or bulk collections on Thursday, Nov. 27. As a result, Thursday and Friday collections will be rescheduled:
-
Thursday pickups shift to Friday, Nov. 28
-
Friday pickups shift to Saturday, Nov. 29
All other collection days — Monday through Wednesday — will remain unchanged. Full residential collection schedules will resume as normal on Monday, Dec. 1.
The revised collection schedule also affects the days extra bags are allowed. Here’s a quick breakdown:
| Normal Collection Day | Shifted To | Extra Bags Allowed |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | No change | Monday, Dec. 1 |
| Tuesday | No change | Tuesday, Dec. 2 |
| Wednesday | No change | Wednesday, Dec. 3 |
| Thursday | Friday, Nov. 28 | Friday, Nov. 28 |
| Friday | Saturday, Nov. 29 | Saturday, Nov. 29 |
Pickup Delays Possible for Extra Bags
City officials remind residents that extra bags may be collected by a different truck and at a different time than the regular garbage cart. They encourage residents to be patient and not report a missed pickup prematurely. However, if it appears the bags were not collected by the end of the day, residents can report it through the MyFW app or by contacting the Fort Worth Contact Center at 817-392-1234.
Drop-Off Stations and Additional Options
If households need to dispose of even more waste than allowed, four City Drop-Off Stations are available to accept excess garbage, bulk waste, yard waste, and recycling. These stations, along with the Environmental Collection Center, will be closed Nov. 27-28 in observance of Thanksgiving, and will reopen on Saturday, Nov. 29.
Another option for residents needing to dispose of extra waste beyond the two free bags is to purchase Pay Bags, which are sold in sets of five for $15 plus tax. These bags can be ordered by calling 817-392-1234 and will be mailed to residents and charged to their water bill.
With these holiday accommodations in place, the City of Fort Worth aims to ensure that residents can enjoy their celebrations without the added stress of excess trash piling up.
