As Ken Paxton battles James Talarico in a tightening race, Brandon Gill’s personal attack fuels fresh political controversy across Texas

Texas – Texas’ closely watched Senate race took another sharp turn over the weekend after Republican Congressman Brandon Gill launched a highly personal attack against Democratic candidate James Talarico, adding fresh controversy to a contest that is already drawing national attention.

The comments came during an interview from the Texas GOP convention, where Gill questioned whether Talarico reflects the values of Texas voters and attempted to portray the Democrat as out of touch with the state’s political culture.

With polls showing a surprisingly competitive race between Talarico and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, Republicans have increasingly focused on defining the Democratic challenger before he can broaden his appeal to voters across the state.

Gill’s remarks quickly stood out because they moved beyond policy disagreements and into personal territory.

“I wouldn’t even say that this is Beto O’Rourke 2.0 because this is a much more effeminate version of Beto O’Rourke,” Gill said during the interview.

He continued by adding, “I think of James Talarico as a barely straight version of Pete Buttigieg.”

Gill also argued that while Talarico may receive attention from political circles in Washington, that popularity does not necessarily translate into support among Texans.

“People in Washington love him, but he doesn’t work with the rest of the country.”

An unexpected response during the interview

The exchange took an unexpected turn near the end of the conversation.

As the interview wrapped up, host Kayleigh McEnany reminded viewers that Talarico has a “longtime girlfriend and she’s very beautiful.”

The comment immediately drew attention because it appeared to push back against the line of criticism Gill had been developing during the discussion.

Talarico’s girlfriend has received some media attention in recent months. Reports have noted that she works as a political lobbyist and previously served as his chief of staff.

The moment quickly became one of the most discussed portions of the interview as clips circulated online.

Republicans and Democrats battle over Talarico’s image

The controversy highlights a broader effort by both parties to shape public perceptions of Talarico as the Senate race intensifies.

Democrats see Talarico as a potentially strong statewide candidate capable of appealing beyond the party’s traditional base. Some compare the enthusiasm around his campaign to previous high-profile Democratic efforts in Texas, including those led by Beto O’Rourke and former Congressman Colin Allred.

Supporters argue that Paxton’s long history of political and legal controversies has created an opening that Democrats have rarely enjoyed in Texas statewide politics.

Republicans, however, are working aggressively to paint Talarico as too liberal for Texas voters.

Gill leaned heavily into that strategy during his interview.

“This is somebody who has had the most weird, absolutely far-left views that he’s now trying to run away from,” he argued.

He also criticized several positions and statements he attributes to Talarico.

“But you can’t go around talking about transing kids or making blasphemous comments about how God is nonbinary or that there are six sexes and expect Texas voters to forget.”

The remarks reflect a growing Republican effort to focus attention on cultural and social issues as the campaign enters a more intense phase.

A race that is becoming increasingly competitive

The political stakes are rising because the Senate contest appears far closer than many expected.

Talarico has worked to present himself as a relatable Texas candidate despite attempts by opponents to portray him as disconnected from everyday voters. Reports have noted that although his family follows a vegan lifestyle, he has made efforts to connect with Texas traditions, including emphasizing his appreciation for barbecue and other aspects of local culture.

Meanwhile, polling suggests neither side can take victory for granted.

According to the latest RealClearPolitics polling average, Talarico currently holds a narrow 0.6 percentage point advantage over Paxton, a margin that effectively places the race within statistical reach for either candidate.

That closeness helps explain why attacks have become increasingly personal and why both campaigns are fighting aggressively for undecided voters.

With months still remaining before Election Day, the battle between Paxton and Talarico is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched races in the country. As candidates and their allies continue trading accusations, the latest clash involving Brandon Gill demonstrates just how heated—and unpredictable—the Texas Senate contest has become.
