Grandmother was on a routine evening walk with her pet when she crossed paths with a young man who pulled out a gun and fired four shots, striking her in the head and chest; man sentenced
Ohio – After more than five years of anguish and uncertainty, the family of a 58-year-old grandmother, identified as S. Wallace, who was brutally murdered while on a routine walk in a park, has finally seen justice served. A 24-year-old man, identified as D. Evans, was sentenced to 15 years in prison for his role in the shocking crime that took place in early 2019.
The incident occurred on January 17, 2019, when Wallace was taking her routine evening stroll with her dog in a local park. According to the prosecutor’s office, Evans, who was 19 years old at the time, accompanied by another man, encountered Wallace during her walk. In a sudden and unprovoked attack, Evans turned, pulled out a gun, and fired four shots, tragically striking Wallace once in the head and once in the chest. The severity of the assault left the local community in shock and mourning, especially as Wallace’s loyal dog was found by neighbors, huddling beside her lifeless body.
The investigation into Wallace’s murder encountered numerous challenges, prolonging the agony for her grieving family. Prosecutor M. O’Malley acknowledged the tireless efforts of the authorities, which ultimately led to the resolution of this cold case. “The Wallace family has waited over five years for answers,” O’Malley stated in a press release. “I want to thank the authorities for never forgetting about the tragic homicide of Wallace and working tirelessly to determine who was responsible.”
Evans’ arrest came in May 2023, while he was already serving a sentence for another offense. A key piece of evidence that linked Evans to the murder was DNA found on a Glock pistol used in another shooting months after Wallace’s death. This gun was recovered and turned into police by a good Samaritan, an act that was later praised by Prosecutor O’Malley during the legal proceedings.
During the sentencing, emotional testimonies from Wallace’s family highlighted the profound impact of her loss. The victim’s daughter expressed her grief in a 2019 interview: “Somebody killed my mom. Somebody shot her in the face and killed her for no reason.” This sentiment underscored the senselessness of the violence that took Wallace from her family.
Evans was ultimately sentenced to 15 years for involuntary manslaughter, felonious assault, and firearm charges. The length of the sentence reflects both the gravity of the crime and the consequences of his actions. Notably, the second man present during the crime was not charged, as reported by local news outlets, leaving some questions in the community.
Wallace was remembered as a loving grandmother of two and a dedicated executive medical secretary at a local clinic. Her sudden and tragic departure not only deprived her family of her presence but also robbed the community of a valued member. The case resonated deeply within the area, prompting calls from local crime stoppers and other community leaders for more vigilance against such random acts of violence.
