Federal investigation leads to indictment of former Dallas sergeant accused of stealing and selling service weapons

Dallas, Texas – A former Dallas police sergeant has been indicted on federal gun charges after allegedly stealing and selling service weapons, according to an announcement by Acting U.S. Attorney Chad Meacham for the Northern District of Texas.
Federal Indictment for Firearm Possession and Sale
Thomas Michael Fry, 52, was formally indicted last week and now faces three counts of possession and sale of a stolen firearm. If convicted, he could face up to 30 years in federal prison.
“Police officers have a sacred duty to uphold the rule of law. Instead, this sergeant betrayed his department – and his community – by allegedly pawning stolen firearms,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Chad Meacham. “The U.S. Attorney’s Office will not hesitate to pursue charges against law enforcement officers who fail to live up to their oaths.”
According to the indictment, three 9mm Sig Sauer pistols were stolen from a Dallas Police Department substation. Sgt. Fry then allegedly took the stolen firearms across state lines and pawned them at a shop in Oklahoma.
Additional State Charges
In addition to the federal charges, Fry has also been charged at the state level with three counts of theft of a firearm. Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine if additional firearms were stolen or sold through similar means.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF) Dallas Field Division and the Dallas Police Department led the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Joshua D. Detzky and Marty Basu are prosecuting the case.
