“She’s barely breathing;” 61-year-old woman hospitalized after her 24-year-old son she got into an argument with hit her “a few times” in the head with a hammer; son charged

Texas – In a deeply distressing incident in Texas, a 24-year-old man, identified as R. Babin, has been arrested after he struck his 61-year-old mother multiple times in the head with a hammer during an argument, leaving her severely injured and hospitalized in critical condition. The attack, which authorities say the suspect later confessed to in a disturbing series of online messages, has left a community reeling and a mother fighting for her life.

Babin was arrested last week and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon following the brutal attack on his mother. According to the sheriff’s office, deputies responded to a 911 call at the family’s home in the evening hours. The call came after Babin allegedly reached out to a friend via a gaming platform, admitting to the crime in real time. “I am in trouble and I need your help,” Babin allegedly wrote to his friend. “I just assaulted my mother with a hammer, I got angry, I don’t know what to do, I can’t go to prison.” In a chilling follow-up message, Babin reportedly added, “I have to get rid of the hammer and destroy the evidence before the police get there. I don’t want to end up on death row. I hit her a few times on the head and the side. She’s barely breathing.”

Authorities say the friend didn’t see the messages until nearly two hours later, a delay that tragically prolonged the victim’s suffering. When deputies arrived at the residence, they found Babin’s mother lying in the backyard, bleeding heavily from her head and unresponsive. The woman was immediately airlifted to a nearby hospital in serious condition. As of the latest update, she remains hospitalized, unable to speak, with her long-term prognosis uncertain.

Investigators believe the attack occurred during an argument between Babin and his mother inside the home. The extent of the woman’s injuries and the number of blows delivered have not been fully disclosed, but an earlier court statement cited at least “a few times” being struck with the hammer, specifically targeting her head and side. Babin initially attempted to deny involvement, telling authorities that he had left his mother napping while he went to the store, and claimed to be surprised by the police presence upon his return. However, the alleged digital messages to his gaming friend contradicted his story and ultimately led to his arrest.

Babin is currently being held in the county jail without bond. If convicted on the charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, he could face up to 20 years in prison. Authorities emphasized the severity of the case, noting that the digital confession played a key role in guiding deputies to the truth behind what happened. No further court dates have been announced, and it is not yet clear whether additional charges may be filed depending on the outcome of the victim’s recovery.
