Governor Abbott demands extradition of suspect who fled to Mexico after murder of Texas commissioner

Austin, Texas – Texas Governor Greg Abbott is demanding swift action following the murder of Texas Facilities Commissioner Eddy Betancourt, formally urging the Mexican government to extradite alleged killer Reynaldo Mata-Rios to face justice in Texas.

Governor Condemns Violence and Calls for Cross-Border Accountability

Governor Abbott released a powerful statement in the wake of Commissioner Betancourt’s tragic death, calling the killing a “senseless murder” and expressing deep sorrow alongside his wife, Cecilia Abbott.

“Cecilia and I are deeply saddened by the senseless murder of Commissioner Eddy Betancourt, whose life was tragically taken on Saturday,” said Governor Abbott. “Betancourt was a patriot who served as Texas Facilities Commissioner with integrity and professionalism. I am formally demanding that President Claudia Sheinbaum and the Mexican government coordinate with the U.S. government to extradite alleged murderer Reynaldo Mata-Rios to Texas so he can face justice.”

Abbott referenced a historical warning made nearly 150 years ago, emphasizing the urgency of not allowing suspects to use the border as a shield. “Those who harm Texans must not be allowed to flee ‘across the Rio Grande’ and from there ‘taunt and defy the citizens of Texas,’ as Governor Coke stated almost 150 years ago.”

He added, “Instead, the Mexican government—if it wishes to be deemed ‘a friendly power’—must refuse to be ‘a sanctuary and place of refuge’ for those who murder Texans and ensure that they will go through due process and face the consequences of their actions.”

Governor Abbott’s demand highlights not only the pursuit of justice for Commissioner Betancourt, but also the importance of international cooperation in cases involving cross-border flight.
