Man harassed his wife he had been separated from for months at work and threatened to kill her on several occasions before breaking into her home and shooting her in the leg; charged

Indiana – In a deeply alarming case of domestic violence in Indiana, a 46-year-old man, identified as C. Gray, is now facing two counts of attempted murder and several other felony charges after allegedly launching a violent campaign against his estranged wife, culminating in a shooting that left the woman injured and terrified for her life. Gray, who had been separated from his wife for months, harassed her for months following their breakup.

According to police reports and court records, he repeatedly showed up at her workplace, where he would threaten her life, telling her on numerous occasions that he’s going to kill her. On one occasion, Gray allegedly tried to run her over with his vehicle while she was outside the store. That terrifying moment, however, was not the end of his aggression.

The day after the attempted vehicular assault, police say Gray escalated his violence even further. According to authorities, he broke into her home by climbing through a window. Once inside, he snuck upstairs, found his estranged wife, and opened fire, reportedly firing five shots. One of those bullets struck the woman in the leg, and during the incident, he also threatened to kill her current boyfriend, who was present in the home at the time.

Thankfully, the woman survived her injuries, and first responders were able to provide medical assistance. She later provided a detailed account to investigators, revealing a harrowing timeline of escalating threats, repeated harassment, and ultimately, an attempt on her life. In addition to the attempted murder charges, Gray now faces counts of burglary, intimidation, battery with a deadly weapon, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon. His criminal history reportedly dates back to 2003 and includes a 2005 arrest for domestic battery. He also currently has an open case for reckless homicide stemming from a 2020 incident, adding further weight to the seriousness of his legal situation.

Gray appeared in court on Thursday, where a $200,000 surety bond was set. The judge also issued a no-contact order, barring him from having any communication with his estranged wife or her current partner. Should he post bail, he will be required to wear a GPS monitor, remain on home detention, and adhere strictly to the conditions of his release. His next court date is scheduled for June 11. Advocates for domestic violence survivors say this case is a disturbing but familiar example of how dangerous the period following a separation can be for victims. Domestic violence awareness advocates stress the critical need for those in abusive relationships to seek help and develop a safety plan.

Gray’s repeated threats, stalking behavior, and the two consecutive days of life-threatening actions have painted a chilling picture of a man desperate to control and harm the woman who left him. His violent response to rejection and refusal to accept the end of the relationship highlight how such situations can spiral into deadly territory if not taken seriously. As Gray awaits further proceedings, his estranged wife continues to recover physically and emotionally from the trauma. Her resilience and quick action likely saved her life—and may help ensure her former partner is held accountable in the courtroom.
