14-year-old boy died after his 16-year-old foster buddy, who threatened him on several occasions, stabbed him to death over a video game console; 16-year-old boy charged

Florida – In a horrific incident inside the walls of a group foster home in Florida, a 16-year-old boy, identified as Ruben W., has been charged as an adult after stabbing a 14-year-old boy, identified as Jordan D., to death during a fight over a video game console. The fatal altercation unfolded at a foster care home where both teenagers had been placed. Ruben, now charged with second-degree murder with a weapon, remains in custody at the county main jail without bond.
The deadly encounter, which prosecutors say was both “dangerous” and “depraved,” cost 14-year-old Jordan his life and exposed disturbing claims of prior threats and an unsafe environment in the group home. According to Jordan’s mother, tensions between her son and Ruben had been escalating for some time. She described a chilling warning that had gone largely unheeded: her son had offered Ruben mozzarella sticks one day, only to be met with a violent outburst. “Jordan asked him one day, ‘Ruben, would you like some mozzarella sticks?’ and he told [my son], ‘No, shut the ‘F’ up, or I’m going to stab you and kill you,’” she recounted. Just two weeks later, Jordan was dead.
The victim’s mother said her pleas for intervention fell on deaf ears. She claimed she had repeatedly informed group home staff that her son was being threatened. A neighbor, B. Pecora, said she too had seen signs of trouble, recalling a conversation with Jordan earlier in the year. He had confided in her that living in the home felt “scary.” Pecora said she had noticed police presence at the foster residence multiple times before the killing.
Jordan’s life, already shaped by hardship, came to a violent end on the afternoon of August 25. The argument began as a verbal dispute, reportedly triggered by a video game console, but quickly escalated into a physical confrontation. An adult supervisor on site at the time witnessed the two teens fighting and stepped in to separate them—moments before the stabbing occurred. Emergency calls released in the days following the incident paint a frantic and heartbreaking scene. “Can you send me law enforcement and send me paramedics, please?” the caretaker pleaded with dispatch. The dispatcher asked, “Where was he stabbed?” to which the caretaker replied, “I don’t see the knife right now, I had to break it up and I had to get involved with this situation.” The caretaker could be heard trying to keep Jordan conscious, repeating, “Talk to me. Are you with me?”
Paramedics arrived shortly afterward, but Jordan did not survive his injuries. His death sent shockwaves through his family and the wider community. A candlelight vigil was held outside the foster home days later. Friends and loved ones gathered, embracing and praying together, trying to make sense of the senseless violence. At the vigil, Jordan’s mother described her son as someone who deeply loved his family and was loved in return. “Everybody that’s here for him, I want to say thank you for just this little bit of time. I know each and every one of us loved him and he loved each and every one of us, unconditionally,” she told those in attendance.
Ruben is expected to appear in court next month. Prosecutors have opted to charge him as an adult, citing the severity of the crime. Though no official sentence has yet been issued, the charge of second-degree murder with a weapon carries the possibility of a lengthy prison term if convicted. Meanwhile, Jordan’s family is preparing to lay him to rest. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to cover funeral expenses. The tragedy has raised renewed concerns about oversight in foster care environments and whether more could have been done to prevent a 14-year-old from dying under a roof meant to protect him.
