Fort Worth begins transformation of historic Will Rogers Coliseum to meet modern demands

Fort Worth, Texas – The iconic Will Rogers Coliseum in Fort Worth is in the midst of a major transformation as the first phase of a $50.5 million renovation project moves forward. The building, which has stood for nearly 90 years, is undergoing both preservation and modernization to meet the demands of a packed year-round calendar while maintaining its historic Art Deco charm.
Renovation efforts began in earnest during the 2025 Stock Show and kicked into full gear in February. Substantial completion is expected by late November, marking a pivotal moment for one of Texas’ most treasured venues.
Since hosting its first major event—the 1936 Texas Centennial Rodeo—the Will Rogers Coliseum has become a mecca for professional rodeo and equestrian events. From the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo, which made the Coliseum its home in 1944, to the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) competitions that began in 1962, the venue has played host to countless marquee events. These include the NCHA Super Stakes, Summer Spectacular, and the arrival of major competitions like the Snaffle Bit Futurity and the Celebration of Champions from the National Reined Cow Horse Association.
With such a tightly packed calendar, the Coliseum’s heavy usage has taken its toll. Decades of foot traffic, hoof traffic, and wear and tear on aging infrastructure prompted the need for significant improvements.
Modernizing While Honoring the Past
Among the key features of the project is the expansion of the concourse by removing outdated offices and rooms to open up sightlines and bring in more natural light. This also improves visibility of the arena floor and enhances overall lighting inside the building. Perhaps one of the most appreciated upgrades by the public will be the long-awaited renovations to restroom facilities.
“This exciting project will transform the facility into a more open environment, giving our guests a greater feel for the excitement on the arena floor while maintaining the Coliseum’s nostalgic feel and look that they’ve always loved,” said Stock Show President and General Manager Matt Carter. “Besides the concourse and restroom improvements, these upgrades will include replacing the major HVAC and electrical systems, adding fire and life safety systems, as well as accessibility accommodations for all guests.”
New multipurpose spaces are also being developed. Rooms at the south end, once used for storage, will now serve as meeting rooms, food service areas, and other support facilities to enhance the year-round usability of the venue.
Exterior and Partnership Enhancements
In keeping with the building’s Art Deco architecture, exterior improvements include removing a non-original awning and restoring historically accurate doors with windows to bring back the structure’s classic appearance. The replacement of the roof will also restore original aluminum ribs, a detail that defined the Coliseum’s early look.
Funding for the renovations comes through a partnership between the City of Fort Worth and the Stock Show. The city will contribute $45.5 million, while the Stock Show is committing $5 million and serving as the project manager. Construction is being handled by Sedalco Construction Services with oversight from the City’s Public Events Department.
The current phase is just the beginning. Plans are already being shaped for future renovations to other parts of the 1936 complex, including the Auditorium and Tower, with hopes of completing the work by the buildings’ centennial anniversaries.
The Will Rogers Coliseum is not just a building—it’s a cultural cornerstone. This renovation ensures it will continue to shine as a beacon of Western heritage and a driver of economic and community vitality for generations to come.
