American Planning Association Texas Chapter recognizes Fort Worth’s Eastside Transportation Plan with Silver Award

Fort Worth, Texas – The City of Fort Worth’s Eastside Transportation Plan has been honored with a Silver Award in the Transportation Planning category by the American Planning Association (APA) Texas Chapter. The award highlights some of the most outstanding planning efforts in Texas, recognizing projects that display originality, innovation, community engagement, and effective implementation.
According to the APA, these projects serve as examples of best practices in planning and can inspire similar efforts across the state and the nation. Fort Worth’s recognition puts a spotlight on how thoughtful, collaborative planning can shape neighborhoods and enhance quality of life.
Community Collaboration and Long-Term Impact
“The Eastside Transportation Plan brought together the community, North Central Texas Council of Governments, Texas Department of Transportation, Trinity Metro and others to develop an actionable suite of projects that will enhance mobility options, economic development and quality of life for all Eastsiders,” said Kelly Porter, Fort Worth assistant director of Transportation & Public Works. “The plan is shaping the now fully funded East Lancaster corridor capital project as a vibrant, safe, walkable ‘to’ place versus a ‘through’ place.”
The plan emphasizes improving mobility and connectivity while creating safer, more walkable streets. It also highlights the importance of turning the East Lancaster corridor into a destination that fosters community development rather than simply serving as a thoroughfare.
Investment in the Eastside
The Eastside Transportation Plan will be included in the city’s upcoming Master Transportation Plan and Comprehensive Plan update, ensuring its role in shaping future projects. In September 2022, City Council approved $1.1 million in funding for the East Lancaster Avenue Corridor and Sub-Regional Planning Study, which was later retitled the Eastside Transportation Plan.
The plan outlines capital projects that will inform the design and reconstruction of key Eastside routes, including East Lancaster Avenue (State Highway 180), Brentwood Stair Road, and Bridge Street. Currently, reconstruction of State Highway 180 from Loop 820 to Riverside Drive is fully funded and already 60% designed.
A Model for Future Planning
By receiving the Silver Award, Fort Worth’s Eastside Transportation Plan is now recognized as a leading example of how comprehensive planning can address transportation challenges while supporting economic growth and community vibrancy. As implementation continues, residents and stakeholders can expect long-term benefits that improve daily travel, strengthen neighborhoods, and create a safer, more welcoming Eastside.
