City of Fort Worth announces closures and service adjustments for New Year’s holiday

Fort Worth, Texas – the City of Fort Worth has announced its official schedule of closures and service modifications for the New Year’s Day holiday on January 1, providing residents with a detailed look at how municipal operations and facilities will be affected.

Solid Waste and Bulk Collection Adjustments

Solid waste services — including garbage, recycling, yard waste, and bulk collection — will be paused on Thursday, Jan. 1 in observance of the holiday. Those whose regular pickup falls on Thursday will instead receive service on Friday, Jan. 2, while Friday pickups will shift to Saturday, Jan. 3.

In addition, bulk collections will resume on Friday, and Monday and Tuesday pickups will follow their usual schedule. The City emphasized that all waste collection services will return to normal on Monday after the holiday.

To help residents manage extra household waste accumulated during the celebrations, each household is allowed to place two extra bags of garbage next to the brown cart during their first pickup day following the holiday. These extra bags will be collected by a separate truck, which may arrive at a different time than the regular collection. Officials urge residents not to call to report a missed pickup if the additional bags are not removed simultaneously with the cart service.

Closures at Drop-Off Sites and Animal Services

All four of Fort Worth’s Drop-Off Stations, along with the Environmental Collection Center, will also be closed on Jan. 1, reopening the following day, Jan. 2.

The City’s Animal Care & Control facilities — including the North Animal Campus and the Silcox Animal Care & Adoption Center — will remain open during normal hours on New Year’s Eve but will be closed on Jan. 1. Regular operations will resume on Jan. 2. Meanwhile, the Hulen and Alliance PetSmart Adoption Centers will remain open on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day during regular business hours.

Municipal Court and Libraries

The Municipal Court (A.D. Marshall Courts Building) will be closed on Dec. 29 for staff training and will remain closed on Jan. 1 and Jan. 2 due to the citywide holiday and additional staff development. Residents should plan accordingly for any court-related matters.

All Fort Worth Public Library locations will be closed on Jan. 1 as well.

City Offices and Emergency Services

Most City offices, including City Hall, will be closed on Jan. 1, though emergency services will remain available and operational throughout the holiday period.

Recreational amenities

Recreation centers will close at 6 p.m. on Dec. 31, with exceptions such as Haws Athletic Center and Sycamore Community Center, which will close at noon. On Jan. 1, all community centers and FW@6 programs will be closed, along with Log Cabin Village.

However, municipal golf courses will remain open on New Year’s Day after closing at 3 p.m. on Dec. 31, and the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge will also be open to visitors on Jan. 1. The McLeland Tennis Center will close early at 1:30 p.m. on Dec. 31 and reopen on Jan. 1 at 10 a.m.

Water Services and Public Transit

Residents can continue to access Fort Worth Water Department’s automated 24-hour call center for payments, emergencies, or account inquiries by dialing 817-392-4477.

Trinity Metro, Fort Worth’s public transportation system, will operate on a modified schedule during the holiday, and riders are encouraged to check routes and times in advance.

Next City Council Meeting

Looking ahead, the next Fort Worth City Council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 6. The day will include a 1 p.m. work session in the Work Session Room at 100 Fort Worth Trail, followed by a 6 p.m. council meeting in the Council Chamber.

Residents are encouraged to plan ahead, observe the temporary changes, and enjoy a safe and happy start to the new year.
