Governor Abbott demands stronger anti fraud actions in Medicaid to protect taxpayer dollars and support eligible Texans
Austin, Texas – Governor Greg Abbott has issued a directive for the Texas Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General and the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) to begin investigations into potential Medicaid fraud. The Governor emphasized that this effort is crucial to protecting taxpayer dollars, preserving access to care for eligible Texans, and ensuring that healthcare services remain efficient and high quality.
Medicaid Fraud Seen as Threat to Healthcare Access and Trust
“Texas provides critical healthcare services to children, pregnant women, the elderly, and people with disabilities through the state’s Medicaid program,” Governor Abbott wrote in the letter. “Access to medical services is a key component in supporting these individuals and Medicaid fraud robs taxpayers and impairs their ability to receive necessary healthcare. During my tenure as Governor, Texas has policed the Medicaid program and proactively combatted fraud, but we will strengthen our efforts to further protect taxpayers, preserve access for eligible Texans, and maintain the integrity of Texas’ Medicaid Program.”
Under his directive, HHSC will enhance anti-fraud efforts by launching targeted investigations into the misuse of funds and any potential redirection of taxpayer dollars away from intended services. The goal is to ensure only eligible recipients benefit from Medicaid and to protect the program from abuse.
Broader Action Against Public Service Fraud
Governor Abbott’s Medicaid initiative comes alongside other steps the state is taking to fight fraud in publicly funded programs. The Governor has also:
-
Directed investigations into potential child care funding fraud
-
Volunteered Texas to join a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development pilot program aimed at eliminating fraud in federal affordable housing initiatives
These coordinated efforts underscore Texas’ broader commitment to fiscal integrity and the responsible use of public resources. Governor Abbott’s letter reinforces the idea that strong oversight not only preserves taxpayer trust but also protects the vulnerable Texans who rely on these programs most.
