City of Dallas launches monthlong initiative to educate residents about housing rights

Dallas, Texas – As April marks Fair Housing Month, the City of Dallas is spotlighting the importance of equitable access to housing by commemorating the 1968 Fair Housing Act, a pivotal law that outlawed discrimination in housing based on race, color, national origin, religion, familial status, or disability. To honor this, the Office of Equity and Inclusion—Fair Housing Division has launched a series of events to spread awareness and engage the community.
Throughout the month, the Fair Housing Division will host its Fair Housing Roadshow, a weekly initiative aimed at educating Dallas residents about their housing rights, informing them of available services, and offering support for reporting housing discrimination. These community-based gatherings will be held every Tuesday in different City Council districts and are open to the public.
City officials including Mayor Pro Tem Tennell Atkins and Councilmembers Jamie Resendiz, Jesse Moreno, and Gay Donnell Willis will join the events. Their participation ensures not only visibility but also active listening and response to residents’ concerns.
Fair Housing Roadshow Event Schedule:
-
April 8, 6:00–7:00 p.m. – District 8 Resource Center / Highland Hills WIC Office (District 8)
-
April 17, 6:00–7:00 p.m. – Pleasant Grove Branch Library (District 5)
-
April 24, 6:00–7:00 p.m. – J. Erik Jonsson Central Library (District 2)
-
April 28, 6:00–7:00 p.m. – Vickery Meadow Youth Development Foundation Center (District 13)
These workshops will feature on-site Fair Housing staff ready to share important information and accept qualifying fair housing complaints directly from residents.
The City of Dallas encourages everyone to participate, get informed, and take action. As the fight for equal housing opportunities continues, events like these play a vital role in creating a fairer and more inclusive Dallas.
