TxDOT launch Be Safe Drive Smart campaign as part of National Work Zone Awareness Week to prevent fatalities

Austin, Texas – Texas drivers are being reminded to slow down, stay alert, and drive smart in work zones as the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) launches its Be Safe. Drive Smart. campaign in conjunction with National Work Zone Awareness Week, observed April 21–25. The campaign comes in response to alarming data showing a sharp rise in work zone crashes and fatalities across the state.

In 2024, nearly 28,000 crashes were reported in work zones throughout Texas. These incidents led to 215 deaths, marking a 12% increase in fatalities compared to the previous year. While construction crews are constantly at risk, TxDOT reports that most of those killed in work zone crashes were drivers or their passengers.

“Our brave and dedicated road crews work year-round across the state, and we need drivers to stay alert in work zones to help keep them and each other safe,” said TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams. “Work zones can mean changing and unexpected conditions as crews work on the roadway. That’s why it’s vital that all Texans plan, avoid distractions and never rush through a work zone.”

To reinforce the message, TxDOT reminds drivers that traffic fines double in work zones when workers are present. The agency also released essential safety tips aimed at preventing crashes:

  • Slow down. Always follow posted speed limits and consider road conditions that may require slower speeds than usual.

  • Stay alert. Keep full attention on the road and avoid distractions like mobile devices.

  • Watch out for road crews. Follow all instructions and heed warning signs; road workers are depending on driver caution.

  • Don’t tailgate. Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and others. Rear-end collisions are the most common type of work zone crash.

  • Allow extra time. Anticipate delays due to road construction and avoid rushing.

TxDOT also stresses compliance with Texas’ Move Over or Slow Down law, which requires drivers to either shift lanes or reduce their speed by 20 mph below the posted limit when approaching emergency or utility vehicles, including TxDOT crews, that are parked with flashing lights.

The Be Safe. Drive Smart. initiative is part of TxDOT’s broader Drive like a Texan: Kind. Courteous. Safe. campaign. This statewide push emphasizes the importance of thoughtful and respectful driving behavior.

By following these safety measures and adjusting driving habits, TxDOT hopes drivers will take an active role in protecting not just road workers, but also themselves and their fellow Texans.
