TxDOT launches safety campaign as pedestrian deaths climb in Texas

Austin, Texas – As cooler temperatures draw more Texans outdoors, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is sounding the alarm over a tragic and preventable trend: pedestrian fatalities on the rise. In 2023 alone, 773 people were killed while walking on Texas roads, a sobering statistic that TxDOT hopes to reverse with its latest outreach effort.

“In Texas, we look out for each other, whether you’re a service member or civilian, and that doesn’t end when you get behind the wheel,” the department emphasized in its call to action. With that principle at the heart of its initiative, TxDOT is urging all Texans to “Drive like a Texan: kind, courteous and safe.”

Why October Raises Red Flags

October marks the peak of pedestrian-related crashes in Texas, according to state traffic records. In October 2024 alone, 89 pedestrians lost their lives, and 143 others suffered serious injuries—most during nighttime hours. Fewer daylight hours and increased foot traffic during the fall months create dangerous conditions for those on foot.

“This time of year, Texans may be more inclined to get outside to enjoy the cooler weather, but fewer daylight hours can create darker, riskier conditions,” said TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams. “We can all do our part to help keep each other safe by taking precautions whether you’re driving down the road or walking in your neighborhood.”

Statewide Safety Messages and Street Teams

As part of its “Be Safe. Drive Smart.” campaign, TxDOT is rolling out a wide-reaching media blitz throughout the month. Texans can expect to see TV and radio ads, billboards, and digital messages reminding drivers and pedestrians alike of their roles in keeping the roads safe.

But the campaign doesn’t stop there. Street teams of walking billboards will also hit the streets in key areas where vehicle and pedestrian traffic intersect. These mobile awareness teams aim to reinforce safety tips in real time and location.

Safety Tips for Drivers and Pedestrians

TxDOT is sharing practical safety reminders for both sides of the street.

For drivers:

  • Stay alert and look out for pedestrians everywhere, at all times.

  • Stop and yield for pedestrians in crosswalks and when turning.

  • Put away your phone and focus on the road.

  • Use extra caution when passing stopped vehicles.

  • Drive within the speed limit and adjust for road conditions.

  • Be particularly mindful when operating large SUVs or trucks that may have front blind spots.

For pedestrians:

  • Cross only at intersections and marked crosswalks.

  • Make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the road.

  • Obey all signals and look both ways before crossing.

  • Avoid distractions like phones and earbuds.

  • Stay visible in low light with reflective materials or flashlights.

Drive Like a Texan Means Looking Out for One Another

This campaign is part of the broader “Drive like a Texan” effort, which promotes road responsibility rooted in state pride and camaraderie. TxDOT believes that “by making thoughtful choices, we can all help keep each other safe.”
