Governor Greg Abbott announces new step to boost nuclear energy development across Texas

Austin, Texas – Governor Greg Abbott has announced a major step forward in expanding nuclear energy in Texas, as applications are now open for programs designed to grow the state’s advanced nuclear industry and strengthen its long-term energy future.
The initiative, led by the Texas Advanced Nuclear Energy Office, focuses on increasing advanced nuclear construction, boosting manufacturing capacity, and positioning Texas as a national leader in what officials describe as a new era of nuclear development.
“To power the Texas of tomorrow, we must boost our state’s advanced nuclear capacity,” said Governor Abbott. “Nuclear energy provides an efficient and reliable energy solution while creating high-wage advanced manufacturing jobs. Through TANEO and the Texas Advanced Nuclear Development Fund, Texas is streamlining the nuclear regulatory environment and making investments to spur a flourishing nuclear energy ecosystem for generations to come.”
Major investment drives nuclear expansion efforts
The current push builds on legislation signed in June 2025, when House Bill 14 created TANEO and established the Texas Advanced Nuclear Development Fund. This fund, valued at $350 million, represents the largest nuclear-focused investment of its kind in the country.
Through this funding, Texas aims to support projects that focus on building advanced reactors, expanding manufacturing tied to nuclear energy, and rebuilding a domestic fuel supply chain within the state. Officials say these efforts are designed to reduce reliance on outside resources while strengthening local industry and job growth.
Eligible projects can apply through two key programs under the fund. These include the Project Development and Supply Chain Reimbursement Program and the Advanced Nuclear Construction Reimbursement Program. Both programs are intended to provide financial support to companies and organizations working on advanced nuclear projects across Texas.
Applicants must first submit a notice of intent by April 23, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. CDT. Full applications must then be completed and submitted by May 14, 2026, at the same time deadline.
State leaders say the initiative reflects a broader effort to secure reliable energy while supporting economic development. By combining investment, policy changes, and industry support, Texas is working to build a strong foundation for future energy needs while creating new opportunities in advanced manufacturing and technology sectors.
