Attorney General Ken Paxton targets solar panel companies amid growing complaints from Texas consumers

Austin, Texas – Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has launched a sweeping initiative aimed at investigating and stopping alleged fraud within the solar panel industry, following a surge in complaints from consumers across the state.

The effort focuses on companies accused of misleading customers about the benefits and performance of solar energy systems. As part of the crackdown, the Office of the Attorney General has issued Civil Investigative Demands to several companies, including Freedom Forever LLC, SunRun Inc., Lone Star Solar Services LLC, and CAM Solar Inc.. Officials say more than 100 formal complaints have already been filed with the agency, with thousands more concerns reported online.

Investigation targets misleading claims and business practices

According to state officials, the companies are being examined for possible violations of the Deceptive Trade Practices-Consumer Protection Act. Investigators are reviewing claims that customers may have been misled about expected savings on electricity bills, the performance of installed solar systems, and the details surrounding contracts and service agreements.

Authorities are also looking into how these companies presented their marketing materials and whether they provided clear and accurate information about warranties, service plans, and system efficiency. In some cases, complaints suggest that consumers were given unrealistic expectations about how much money they would save after installing solar panels.

The Civil Investigative Demands require the companies to provide detailed records, including documents that show how they track changes in customers’ electricity bills after installation. Officials are also seeking access to contracts, promotional materials, and internal policies to better understand how these businesses operate.

“Thousands of Texans have been targeted by companies selling solar panel systems, and it’s imperative that these companies are held responsible for any lies or deceptive marketing they use,” said Attorney General Paxton. “This initiative to stop widespread fraudulent activity in the solar panel industry is only beginning, and my office will take legal action against any corporations breaking the law and scamming Texans.”

State leaders say the investigation is still ongoing, and further legal action could follow depending on the findings. The initiative signals a broader push to protect consumers and ensure that companies operating in the fast-growing solar industry follow the law and provide honest information to customers.
