Texas public transit systems to receive major federal and state funding to enhance rural and urban transportation services

Austin, Texas – In a significant move to improve the everyday lives of Texans, the Texas Transportation Commission has awarded $96 million in state and federal funding to support and expand public transit programs across the state. This investment is intended to improve mobility for residents in both rural and urban areas, ensuring that more people have access to reliable transportation for work, education, medical care, and other essential needs.
Boosting Access to Daily Necessities
Public transportation is a crucial service for many Texans, particularly those without personal vehicles or who face mobility challenges. In 2024 alone, transit districts backed by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) provided over 24 million rides across the state. This new funding package builds on that impact, providing further support to 64 public transit agencies that help individuals remain mobile and connected.
“These funds will provide Texans in both rural and urban areas with safe, reliable transportation options that enhance quality of life and expand economic opportunity,” said Texas Transportation Commissioner Alvin New. “These programs help connect people to their communities and offer vital mobility for those who may otherwise have no means of getting around.”
The funding is directed toward programs that enhance transportation for seniors and people with disabilities, expand on-demand services, and ensure that existing transit networks continue to operate efficiently. The goal is not just mobility—it’s about improving the quality of life and independence of those who rely on public transit to function in their day-to-day lives.
Personal Impact Through Public Transit
Among the many Texans whose lives have been changed by TxDOT-supported transit programs is Alejandra Sanchez, a McAllen resident who is blind. Through the Valley Association for Independent Living, a program funded by TxDOT, she received travel training that helped her learn how to use public transportation independently.
“The travel training program changed my life. I am more independent, and I learned how to navigate the community using public transportation,” Sanchez said. “I’m happy to say that I feel more confident in getting around my community for work and recreation. I never had an opportunity like that before.”
Her story is just one example of how transit funding goes far beyond infrastructure—it’s about empowerment, opportunity, and dignity.
Regional Programs Receiving Support
The newly awarded funding will have a wide-reaching impact, strengthening transit offerings throughout the state. Highlights include:
-
Wichita Falls Transit System & SHARP Lines Rural Public Transportation: These two organizations are working together to improve mobility for seniors and individuals with disabilities. Their partnership ensures that vulnerable populations in the region can access essential services and enjoy a better quality of life through dependable transportation.
-
East Texas Council of Governments (ETCOG): Covering 14 counties, ETCOG’s GoBus service offers flexible, on-demand transportation for a wide range of users, including seniors, students, individuals with disabilities, and job seekers. Their expansive reach makes it easier for rural communities to stay connected.
-
Concho Valley Transit District (CVTD): Operating in 13 counties, CVTD has become a critical provider for those with limited transportation options. By collaborating with local organizations such as the Concho Valley Economic Development District Inc., CVTD is able to offer comprehensive transportation support throughout the region.
“We are incredibly proud to have the TxDOT program as part of our services here at Concho Valley Transit,” said Jeff York, Director of Transportation for CVTD. “It’s rewarding to know that we’re helping improve the quality of life for so many individuals in our community. Being able to contribute to their independence and mobility is a privilege, and we remain committed to making sure everyone has access to the resources they need to thrive.”
As Texas continues to grow, investments like this help ensure that no community is left behind. The $96 million in funding will help meet the diverse needs of millions of Texans and reinforce the critical role of public transit in connecting people to opportunity.
