Texas pays respects to Charlie Kirk by lowering flags on all state government buildings

Austin, Texas – Governor Greg Abbott has ordered all state government buildings across Texas to lower the United States and Texas flags to half-staff in tribute to Charlie Kirk, following the announcement of his death. This directive aligns with a national proclamation issued by President Donald J. Trump to honor Kirk’s life and influence.

The flags are to remain lowered until sunset on Sunday, September 14, 2025, at which point they should be returned to full-staff.

In a statement issued yesterday, Governor Abbott shared his sorrow and deep respect for Kirk’s work and influence. “Cecilia and I are heartbroken by the assassination and passing of Charlie Kirk,” the Governor said. “Charlie’s voice was a beacon for millions of young Americans searching for truth, courage, and conviction. This senseless act of violence has no place in America. Our prayers are with Charlie’s family and his loved ones, especially the two young children he leaves behind. Texas stands with them in mourning and in honoring Charlie’s enduring legacy.”

Charlie Kirk, known for founding Turning Point USA, was a high-profile conservative activist and commentator. His influence stretched far beyond political circles, becoming a prominent voice for many young conservatives across the country. His assassination has stunned the nation, drawing widespread expressions of grief and solidarity.

Governor Abbott’s decision to lower the flags is a symbolic act of mourning, not just for the state of Texas, but for all Americans grieving the loss of a powerful public figure. Kirk’s work in politics, media, and youth engagement earned him both devoted followers and prominent critics, but his presence in American discourse was undeniably significant.

As tributes pour in and investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding his death, the nation reflects on the life and message of a man whose platform touched millions. The lowering of flags marks a solemn acknowledgment of that impact and a show of unity against violence.
