New state grant helps bring Fort Worth’s Oak Grove Community Park closer to reality

Fort Worth, Texas – The Fort Worth Park & Recreation Department has received another major boost to support the long-anticipated Oak Grove Community Park, thanks to a $1.5 million Urban Outdoor Grant awarded by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD). This latest award builds on a previous $1.5 million TPWD grant from 2025, alongside local matching funds, bringing the total project funding to an estimated $6.5 million.

Located on a 67-acre property in southeast Fort Worth, at the corner of Oak Grove Road and Oak Grove Shelby Road, the park site was acquired by the City back in November 2015. After years of planning and funding efforts, the vision for a fully developed community park is finally coming to life.

“We are thrilled to receive a second TPWD grant to expand the recreational opportunities at Oak Grove Park,” said Joel McElhany, assistant director of Park & Recreation. “This park will be a welcoming destination for families to explore, play and enjoy the outdoors for years to come.”

Park Features and Construction Timeline

The construction phase is scheduled to begin this fall, and all improvements will be bid and built together as one comprehensive development project. Planned park features include a mix of paved and soft surface trails, nature areas, interpretive signage, and various recreational amenities such as playgrounds, sports courts, sports practice fields, pavilions, and expanded parking.

The funding and development of Oak Grove Community Park is a significant step forward in enhancing outdoor access and recreational spaces for families in Fort Worth. With the combined efforts of local support and state investment, the park is set to become a vibrant community hub for years to come.
