Texas attorney general targets largest meatpackers in new antitrust investigation tied to beef prices
Texas – Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced a new investigation targeting the nation’s beef industry over allegations that major meatpacking companies may have engaged in anticompetitive behavior that harmed cattle ranchers and consumers.
According to Paxton’s office, the investigation will focus on whether some of the country’s largest meatpackers manipulated the market in ways that lowered prices paid to ranchers while increasing beef prices for families at grocery stores.
The investigation will be conducted alongside a separate antitrust probe announced by the United States Department of Justice under President Donald Trump’s administration.
State officials said the beef processing industry is heavily concentrated among four major companies: JBS S.A., Tyson Fresh Meats Inc., Cargill Inc., and National Beef Packing Co..
According to the attorney general’s office, those four corporations collectively control more than 85 percent of the nation’s beef processing market.
Investigation Focuses On Market Power And Beef Prices
Officials said the large amount of industry consolidation may have allowed the companies to gain enormous influence over both cattle producers and consumers throughout the country.
Reports cited by Paxton’s office allege the companies may have used that market dominance to suppress prices paid to cattle ranchers while simultaneously pushing consumer beef prices higher.
State officials claimed the companies generated substantial profits while ranchers and families faced financial pressure from the pricing imbalance.
“Texans deserve fairly priced beef and our state’s cattle ranchers deserve to be paid fairly for their hard work,” Attorney General Paxton said. “If major meatpackers manipulated the market to underpay ranchers while forcing families to pay higher prices at the grocery store, we will hold them accountable.”
Paxton also pledged aggressive enforcement efforts if evidence of antitrust violations is uncovered during the investigation.
“My office will aggressively investigate any violations of antitrust law to protect fair competition, ranchers, and Texas consumers,” he added.
The attorney general’s office is now encouraging individuals connected to the beef industry to provide information if they have concerns involving possible market manipulation, price fixing, or other antitrust violations.
Officials asked industry participants with relevant information to contact the Antitrust Division within the Texas Attorney General’s Office through a dedicated email address established for the investigation.
The probe represents another major effort by Texas officials to scrutinize industries accused of limiting competition and increasing prices for consumers through concentrated market control.
