New DPS Director Freeman Martin vows to tackle Texas public safety and homeland security threats

Austin, Texas – Governor Greg Abbott administered the oath of office to Freeman F. Martin, officially naming him the 14th Director of the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). The ceremony, held at the DPS Headquarters in Austin, brought together public safety officials, law enforcement leaders, and key state dignitaries to recognize Martin’s decades-long commitment to upholding public safety and the rule of law.

Celebrating Leadership and Experience

Governor Abbott commended Martin for his extensive career in public safety. “Freeman Martin brings an extraordinary wealth of experience to this position,” said Abbott. He highlighted Martin’s impressive rise through the ranks, from Texas Highway Patrol trooper to Senior Deputy Director of DPS, emphasizing Martin’s deep understanding of the agency’s operations. “What matters even more is what lies in the heart of a leader—and what lies in the heart of Freeman Martin is true dedication to the rule of law. He will ensure Texas remains a law-and-order state and safeguard the public safety of Texans,” Abbott added.

A Mission to Strengthen Texas Safety

Accepting his new role, Director Martin acknowledged the challenges facing the state and expressed his commitment to tackling them. “Today, Texas faces the most significant public safety and homeland security threats of our entire lifetime—and addressing those threats is no small task,” Martin said. He thanked Governor Abbott and the Public Safety Commission for their trust, pledging to enhance the department’s capabilities. “As Director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, it’s my job to make Texas safer and make the department better. And with the talent that we have across our state at every level, we will make that happen.”

A Storied Career in Public Safety

Martin’s career spans more than three decades of dedicated service. Starting as a Texas Highway Patrol trooper in Winnie in 1990, he progressed through key roles, including THP Corporal in Lubbock, Narcotics Service Sergeant in Houston, and various leadership positions within the Texas Rangers, such as Captain and Major in Houston. In 2014, he was appointed Regional Commander for the Central Texas Region. His expertise and leadership earned him the title of Deputy Director of Homeland Security Operations in 2018, where he oversaw critical security initiatives.

With increasing public safety and homeland security challenges, including border security and violent crime, Martin will lead the agency in addressing these pressing issues.
