Texans impacted by winter storm given more time to apply for SNAP replacement benefits

Austin, Texas – Governor Greg Abbott has announced that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) has received federal approval to extend the deadline for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients to apply for replacement benefits after January’s severe winter storm disrupted homes and left many without food.

“Thanks to our partners in the White House, Texans affected by the recent winter storm have more time to apply for SNAP benefits to replace any food they lost,” said Governor Abbott. “By extending the replacement benefit deadline, Texans are better equipped to feed their families and recover from the effects of the freezing weather. I thank Texas Health and Human Services Commission and the Trump administration for their unwavering support of Texas families.”

With this new approval, SNAP recipients now have until February 23, 2026, to request replacement benefits for food lost or spoiled due to the storm. Once approved, funds will be reloaded onto recipients’ Lone Star Cards within two business days.

How and Where to Apply

To apply, individuals must visit a local HHSC office. Office locations can be found by visiting YourTexasBenefits.com and clicking on “Find an Office” at the bottom of the page.

Further help is available for those impacted by natural disasters through the HHSC Receiving Disaster Assistance webpage. Texans seeking nearby food, shelter, or emergency resources are encouraged to dial 2-1-1 and press option 1 for immediate assistance.

“The winter storm and power outages left many communities in difficult situations,” said Stephanie Muth, HHS Executive Commissioner. “We are thankful that we can offer this support to families who are still recovering from the storms.”

Access to Help When It Matters Most

The state’s action ensures that low-income Texans affected by the storm will not be forced to go without food while recovering from the effects of freezing temperatures and utility disruptions.

Governor Abbott emphasized that these efforts are part of a larger commitment to help Texans recover and stay safe during and after emergencies. He praised the ongoing collaboration between HHSC and federal partners in delivering timely aid to Texas families.

Texans in need of help navigating SNAP benefits, emergency response resources, or general assistance are reminded to use the official channels listed above to avoid delays. The HHSC Customer Service Center is also available 24/7 at 800-FOR-ROAD (367-7623), though callers should be prepared for longer wait times due to historically high call volumes.

As the state braces for future storms and low temperatures, officials urge residents to stay informed, remain prepared, and access assistance when needed.
