Regional leaders reveal strategy to handle travel demand for FIFA World Cup 2026 in North Texas

Fort Worth, Texas – Regional leaders across North Texas have unveiled a large-scale transportation plan designed to move thousands of fans and visitors during the FIFA World Cup 2026, as officials prepare for one of the biggest events ever hosted in the area.
The plan, presented by the North Texas FWC Organizing Committee and the North Central Texas Council of Governments, outlines how visitors will travel across the Dallas-Fort Worth region to reach key locations, including Dallas Stadium in Arlington, the FIFA Fan Festival Dallas at Fair Park, and other major event sites.
Officials say the strategy focuses on using a mix of transportation options to handle the expected surge in travel demand. This includes public transit systems, rideshare services, and road networks working together to keep movement steady throughout the tournament.
Regional coordination aims to reduce congestion
Transportation leaders stressed that planning for the event has required close cooperation between multiple cities, agencies, and transit systems. Fort Worth officials say they have played a leading role in building this coordinated effort.
“The City infrastructure team continues its regional coordination with TxDOT, Trinity Metro and suburbs on a well-coordinated strategy to move people to and from the games with minimal impact on residents working and moving through the network,” said Transportation and Public Works Assistant Director Kelly Porter. “We advise residents to work from home on game days and to anticipate more traffic. Pack your patience around popular areas that may be more crowded than usual, especially downtown, the Cultural District, Stockyards and local malls.”
Residents are also encouraged to report any transportation issues through the MyFW app, allowing officials to respond quickly during high-traffic periods.
The transportation plan is being led by NCTCOG in partnership with several agencies, including Dallas Area Rapid Transit, Trinity Metro, Texas Department of Transportation, and the Trinity Railway Express. Together, these groups are working to provide reliable travel options for both residents and visitors.
“The FIFA World Cup represents something entirely new: the largest sporting event in the world coming to one of the fastest-growing regions in the country,” said Michael Morris, director of transportation for NCTCOG. “Embracing this historic opportunity required unprecedented collaboration across our cities, counties, state transportation department and transit agencies to deliver a transportation strategy worthy of a global stage.”
Match day travel plans and options
Officials highlighted a detailed plan for match days, recognizing that World Cup crowds are expected to rely heavily on public transit. Fans traveling from Dallas or Fort Worth will be able to take the Trinity Railway Express to CentrePort Station. From there, charter buses will transport them to a designated Bus Hub near the stadium, followed by a short half-mile walk to the entrance.
Rideshare services will also play a key role. A designated lot at Esports Stadium Arlington will serve as the primary pickup and drop-off location for these services, helping to manage traffic flow around the stadium.
For those choosing to drive, the region’s extensive highway system will provide multiple routes to reach the venue, along with available parking options. However, officials continue to stress that using transit may be the most efficient way to attend matches and events.
With millions expected to travel through North Texas during the tournament, leaders say the success of the transportation plan will depend on coordination, preparation, and public cooperation. By combining multiple travel options and encouraging flexible planning, the region aims to deliver a smooth experience for both visitors and residents during this global event.
