Garland ISD cancels remaining school year after severe storms hit Texas
Garland, Texas – Garland ISD has decided that students will not return to school for the rest of the year due to severe storms on Tuesday that led the district to call off the remaining school days. The storms on Tuesday caused extensive damage throughout North Texas, particularly in Garland, leaving many without electricity.
Because of the damage and power failures at Garland schools, the district had to cancel classes on Tuesday and Wednesday. They then chose to also cancel Thursday’s classes, effectively concluding the school year early. There will be no need for makeup days.

“Please know that this decision was not made lightly, and our primary concern remains the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and community members,” the school district said. “The challenges posed by the recent weather have made it impractical for campuses to continue with school.”
Garland ISD has confirmed that high school graduation ceremonies and practices for seniors will go ahead as scheduled. However, all other events marking the end of the school year are canceled, including graduation and awards ceremonies for students from pre-K through 11th grade. The district is notifying parents and students to organize times to collect personal belongings or return school equipment.
School was also out on Monday for Memorial Day, making last Friday the unofficial last day of school for Garland ISD.

After thoroughly assessing the recent power outages and building damages across our district, the decision has been made to cancel school tomorrow, Thursday, May 30, 2024. There will be no make up days and this concludes the remainder of the school year.
We understand that this is typically a fun and exciting time of year for students, with many special events and activities planned. Please know that this decision was not made lightly, and our primary concern remains the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and community members. The challenges posed by the recent weather have made it impractical for campuses to continue with school. While many families were fortunate not to lose power or have their homes impacted by the storms, many of our GISD communities continue to be impacted.
