Dallas City Council unanimously approves major grant to transform historic Forest Theater

Dallas, Texas – The Dallas City Council has unanimously approved an $8 million grant to support Forest Forward’s ambitious $81 million project to restore and expand the historic Forest Theater in South Dallas. This revitalization marks a significant milestone in restoring the theater, which has been closed since 2008, while sparking economic and cultural growth in the community.

A Cultural and Economic Revival

The redevelopment of the Forest Theater will breathe new life into a cherished landmark. The plans include restoring the original 500-seat theater, expanding it by 28,000 square feet, and adding a 175-seat black box theater. The site will also feature a café and a rooftop deck, creating a dynamic space for cultural engagement. Once completed, the theater is expected to host over 140 events annually, establishing itself as a vibrant hub for community arts and entertainment.

“This project brings a cherished asset back to life while creating jobs and cultural opportunities for our community,” said Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Adam Bazaldua.

Funding and Vision

The $8 million grant includes $7 million from the City’s Infrastructure Investment Fund, an initiative launched in 2023 to promote development in underserved areas. The Forest Theater project exemplifies the city’s commitment to targeted investment and the transformative power of updated economic development policies.

“This project showcases the impact of our updated Economic Development Policy,” said Interim City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert. “We’re proud to support Forest Forward and help restore this landmark.”

Transforming South Dallas

Forest Forward’s vision extends beyond restoring a theater; it aims to make the Forest Theater a cultural cornerstone that stimulates growth and fosters a sense of pride in South Dallas. Elizabeth Wattley, President of Forest Forward, expressed enthusiasm about the project’s potential impact, saying, “Forest Theater’s revitalization will strengthen South Dallas economically and culturally.”

The restoration of the Forest Theater represents not only a celebration of South Dallas’ cultural heritage but also a bold step toward creating a brighter, more dynamic future for the area.
