Governor Abbott calls for statewide preparedness ahead of predicted heavy rainfall and flash flooding in Texas
Houston, Texas – Governor Greg Abbott has directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to activate state emergency response resources as East and Southeast Texas brace for significant rainfall and potential flash flooding over the weekend. The proactive measures aim to ensure the safety of residents and assist local officials in flood response efforts.
Emergency Resources Activated
Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of preparation in a statement, saying, “Texas is deploying emergency response resources ahead of severe weather. As heavy rainfall and flash flooding threats begin this weekend, I directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management to activate Swiftwater Rescue Boat Squads and search and rescue teams to help local officials respond throughout the heavy rainfall and storms. Texans are urged to monitor the weather, make an emergency plan, and heed the guidance of state and local officials to keep themselves and their loved ones safe. Remember: Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”
The National Weather Service forecasts that heavy rainfall will begin Sunday and may continue into the overnight hours, posing a risk of flash flooding in the affected areas. To address this, the state has mobilized several emergency response teams, including:
- Swiftwater Rescue Boat Squads from the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (Texas A&M Task Force 1).
- Game Warden Search and Rescue Boat Teams from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
These teams are equipped to assist in rescue operations and respond quickly to flood-related emergencies.
Encouraging Preparedness
Governor Abbott urged Texans to take proactive steps to ensure their safety during the anticipated severe weather. Residents are encouraged to:
- Follow instructions from local officials.
- Create an emergency plan.
- Prepare an emergency supply kit.
Additional resources for preparedness include:

- DriveTexas.org for road condition updates.
