Emergency shelters in Fort Worth prepare for increased demand during upcoming winter storm

Fort Worth, Texas – As another wave of freezing temperatures moves in on Tuesday night, the City of Fort Worth is reinforcing its efforts to protect individuals experiencing homelessness. Local officials are reminding the community about available resources, including emergency shelters and overflow facilities, to ensure no one is left without a warm and safe place to stay.

Coordinated Efforts to Provide Shelter

The City of Fort Worth is working in collaboration with multiple departments, emergency shelter operators, public safety teams, emergency management officials, and Trinity Metro to prevent shelters from exceeding capacity during cold weather activations. Overflow shelter operator When We Love is also assisting in accommodating individuals when existing emergency shelters reach their limits.

Emergency Shelters Available

Individuals in need of shelter are encouraged to first report to the city’s established emergency shelters. These shelters provide consistent support and serve as the initial contact points for those seeking refuge from the extreme cold.

For individuals, the following shelters are available:

  • Presbyterian Night Shelter – 2400 Cypress St.
  • Union Gospel Mission – 1321 E. Lancaster Ave.

For families, the primary shelter location is:

  • The Salvation Army – 1855 E. Lancaster Ave.
    • To stay at this facility, households must include at least one parent and one child.

Overflow Shelter Activation During Extreme Cold

When weather conditions meet the threshold for emergency cold weather activation, overflow shelters are opened to accommodate additional guests. If a regular shelter reaches capacity, individuals will be relocated to an overflow facility where they can find a bed for the night.

This winter, overflow shelters have been activated 24 times, averaging 90 guests per night. The highest recorded shelter usage occurred on Thursday, January 9, when a total of 1,236 people were housed overnight across all Fort Worth shelters, including 140 individuals at the city’s overflow shelter.

To check if overflow shelters have been activated, residents can call 311 and press 9 for updates.

Daytime Resource for Individuals in Need

For those who need a safe place to stay during the day, True Worth Place serves as the city’s primary daytime resource for adults experiencing homelessness. Located at 1513 E. Presidio St., True Worth Place operates daily from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., offering warmth, food, and additional services for those in need.

With dangerously low temperatures expected, Fort Worth remains committed to providing shelter and assistance to its most vulnerable residents. Community members are encouraged to spread awareness about these resources and help those in need find safety during extreme winter conditions.
