Federal grand jury brings charges against twelve individuals for assaulting officers in Texas detention center

La Villa, Texas – A federal grand jury has indicted twelve individuals for their involvement in an assault on two federal correctional officers in January 2025. U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei announced the charges, which were returned against the accused, all of whom are undocumented immigrants.

Defendants Face Serious Charges

The individuals charged in the case include ten Mexican nationals: Bryan Hernandez-Ruiz, Francisco Antonio Hernandez-Mora, Ivan Ramirez-Zapata, Adrian David Guzman-Salas, David Ramirez-Bautista, Roberto Fabian Garza-Castaneda, Jose Alberto Resendez-Hernandez, Jose Ramos-Lerma, Ruben Gonzalez-Balderas, and Oscar Ambrocio Hernandez. Two Guatemalan nationals, Osman Joel Hernandez-Pavon and Roger Emmanuel Lemus, were also named in the indictment.

Prosecutors allege that the twelve men acted together in the assault on two federal corrections officers at the East Hidalgo Detention Center in La Villa, Texas. The charges indicate that all of the defendants aided and abetted the attack.

“The Department of Justice has zero tolerance for violence against law enforcement officers,” said U.S. Attorney Ganjei. “The grand jury has returned an indictment that alleges a serious attack on two corrections officers, and, rest assured, the Southern District of Texas will hold accountable all those found guilty.”

If convicted, each of the accused individuals faces a potential sentence of up to eight years in federal prison. They could also be subject to a fine of up to $250,000.

All twelve have been in custody since the alleged assault and will remain detained throughout the legal process.

Authorities have not released additional details about the incident, but the indictment underscores the federal government’s commitment to prosecuting those who commit violent crimes against law enforcement personnel. The case will proceed through the federal court system in the Southern District of Texas as officials work to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
