47-year-old man, who beat his 32-year-old visually impaired girlfriend he locked in a room for days and used needle-nose pliers “to shut her up,” before mutilating her body, learns his fate

Michigan – In a deeply disturbing case in Michigan, a 47-year-old man, identified as D. Varnes, who admitted to brutally abusing and killing his 32-year-old visually impaired girlfriend, identified as T. Johnson, inside a motel room, has learned he will spend decades in prison. Varnes entered a plea of no contest to charges of second-degree murder, torture, and concealing a death, all related to the death of Johnson. Prosecutors said the charges stemmed from a prolonged period of violence during which Varnes repeatedly assaulted Johnson while keeping her confined inside a motel room.
Under a plea agreement reached with prosecutors, Varnes was sentenced to 32 years in a Michigan state correctional facility, bringing a grim end to a case that exposed disturbing acts of cruelty. Authorities said Johnson was subjected to severe abuse over the course of more than a week before she died. Even after her death, Varnes remained in the motel room with her body for several days before the crime was finally reported to police. According to investigators, Varnes had been staying in the motel room with Johnson when he began subjecting her to repeated violence. During questioning by detectives, Varnes admitted to carrying out multiple brutal attacks against her. Authorities said he beat Johnson using his hands, kicked her with his boots, and struck her with various objects inside the room. At one point during the assault, prosecutors said Varnes used needle-nose pliers on his girlfriend’s mouth “to shut her up.”
Investigators later revealed that the attacks were not a single incident but instead occurred over an extended period of time. According to testimony from detectives, Varnes admitted that he repeatedly assaulted Johnson during those days. “He had said at one point that he ‘beat the s— out of her,'” a detective told the court while describing Varnes’ statements during interrogation. “At one point in the conversation, he said he hit her at least 10 times.” Police also discovered numerous tools inside the motel room that were believed to have been used during the assaults. Among the items recovered were scissors, a ratchet, side cutters, screwdrivers, and pliers. Forensic testing later showed that Johnson’s blood was present on the tools. Medical examiners later determined that Johnson died from “multiple traumatic injuries, recent and remote with related complications.”
The crime came to light in an unexpected way in the early morning hours of Sept. 1, 2024. According to investigators, a local drug dealer had arranged to meet Varnes at a nearby gas station to sell him crack cocaine. However, when the two met, Varnes allegedly took the drugs and ran off without paying the agreed-upon $60. The dealer then called Varnes, who told him to come to his motel room. When the man arrived at the room, he noticed something strange. On the bed was what appeared to be a human body covered with a blanket.
While speaking with the dealer, Varnes reportedly gestured toward the bed and told him he also had “this situation going on.” Confused and alarmed, the dealer asked what was underneath the covers. “You know exactly what that is,” Varnes reportedly replied. He then pulled back the blanket, revealing Johnson’s body. According to the dealer’s testimony, the woman appeared to have been dead for several days. Varnes allegedly claimed that Johnson had been injured while visiting friends earlier and that she had died from those injuries. Because no one knew she was with him at the motel, he reportedly suggested it would be easy to dispose of the body. The dealer quickly left the room and called 911 to report what he had seen.
Police officers arrived at the motel shortly after the emergency call was made. By the time they reached the room, Varnes had already fled the area. Authorities said he ran from the motel and disappeared into nearby woods. A search began, and officers eventually located Varnes in the forest around 4 p.m. that same day. He was taken into custody and later questioned by detectives. During the investigation, neighbors at the motel expressed shock at what had happened. One woman who had been staying next door for more than two months said she never suspected anything so violent was happening in the room. “Absolutely not, no, for the entire whole two, two and a half months that he has been our neighbor we have seen him every single day,” she said.
Following his arrest and the investigation that followed, prosecutors charged Varnes with multiple crimes tied to Johnson’s death. Instead of going to trial, Varnes ultimately entered a no-contest plea to second-degree murder, torture, and concealing a death. The plea deal resulted in a sentence of 32 years in prison, meaning Varnes will spend decades behind bars for the brutal killing. For Johnson’s loved ones, the sentencing marked the final chapter in a deeply disturbing case involving prolonged violence and cruelty that ended with the loss of a 32-year-old woman whose life was cut short inside a motel room.
