Governor Abbott recognized for efforts to expand Texas Japan economic cooperation and growth

Irving, Texas – Texas Governor Greg Abbott took center stage this week at the Japan American Society DFW Awards Gala, where he was recognized for his efforts to strengthen ties between Texas and Japan while also highlighting the deep and growing economic relationship between the two.
Abbott received the 2026 Sun and Star Legacy Award, an honor given for leadership and commitment to building both economic and cultural connections. The recognition reflects years of collaboration between Texas and Japan, a partnership that continues to expand across several key industries.
“Texas and Japan share similar values like hard work, freedom, and innovation,” said Governor Abbott. “That’s why we collaborate on issues like advanced manufacturing, life sciences, and on energy areas that require creative solutions to today’s largest challenges. Our shared values enhance prosperity for both Texas and Japan, and be assured that I will continue my work to strengthen the Texas-Japan relationship.”
Strong economic ties and growing investments
During his remarks, Abbott pointed to Texas’ strong economic standing, noting that the state has been named the Best State for Business for 21 years in a row. He also highlighted its leading position in economic development, job creation, and new business investment.
Japan plays a major role in that success. According to the governor, Japan is Texas’ seventh-largest trading partner, with more than $25.9 billion in annual trade. Over the last decade, Japanese companies have made a significant impact across the state, launching more than 140 investment projects.
These projects have supported tens of thousands of jobs in Texas, particularly in areas such as advanced manufacturing, energy, and life sciences. The continued investment shows how closely tied the two economies have become, with both sides benefiting from shared growth and innovation.
The awards gala brought together several prominent leaders and figures connected to this partnership. Among those present were Plano Mayor John Muns, Toyota CEO Tetsu Ogawa, Japan American Society DFW President Grant Ogata, Consul General Takeshi Koyama, and Texas Restaurant Association CEO Dr. Emily Knight, along with other business and community leaders.
The event served not only as a moment of recognition for Abbott but also as a reminder of the long-term relationship between Texas and Japan. Officials say that continued collaboration will remain a key focus, especially as industries evolve and new opportunities emerge.
With trade, investment, and shared values driving the partnership forward, Texas leaders are signaling that the connection with Japan will continue to grow, shaping economic progress and opening new doors for businesses and workers in both regions.
