Ken Paxton and James Talarico launch brutal attacks on each other within minutes of Texas Senate runoff result

Texas – Texas’ upcoming Senate race exploded into an immediate political war Tuesday night after Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton secured his runoff victory and Democratic nominee James Talarico responded with a blistering attack just moments later.

What could have been a standard post-election celebration quickly turned into one of the most aggressive openings to a Senate battle in recent Texas political memory, with both candidates wasting no time portraying the other as dangerous, extreme, and deeply tied to a broken political system.

Talarico, a Democratic state representative who has gained growing national attention in recent months, moved almost instantly after Paxton’s win became official.

Posting on X, formerly Twitter, Talarico framed the race as a direct fight against corruption.

“Ken Paxton is the most corrupt politician in America. He embodies the broken system we’re running against. It’s time to come together: The People vs. Ken Paxton,” Talarico wrote.

The Democrat then released a video message escalating his attack even further by pointing directly to Paxton’s past impeachment battle inside Texas politics.

“Three years ago, Ken Paxton was impeached by his own party for using his public office to enrich himself, and his donors, at the expense of the people,” Talarico said.

“That kind of corruption is the rot at the core of this broken system.”

The rapid response signaled exactly how Democrats plan to approach the race moving forward. Instead of focusing only on policy disagreements, Talarico immediately centered the campaign around ethics, trust, and Paxton’s long history of political controversies.

Paxton, however, had already started launching attacks of his own before Talarico’s online posts fully spread across social media.

Speaking to supporters after his runoff victory, the Republican attorney general portrayed Talarico as an extremist tied directly to national Democratic leadership.

“This campaign is not about red versus blue. It’s about so much more. My opponent is the most extreme radical the Democrats have ever nominated,” Paxton told the crowd.

He then sharpened the attack further.

“The reality is James Talarico is going to be nothing more than a Texas-faced puppet for Chuck Schumer and the national Democrats.”

The exchange immediately revealed how personal and nationalized the Texas Senate race is likely to become over the coming months.

Rather than positioning the contest as a traditional Texas campaign focused mainly on state issues, both candidates instantly tied each other to larger national political battles.

Talarico is attempting to present Paxton as a symbol of corruption and Trump-era political chaos. Paxton, meanwhile, is trying to define Talarico as an extension of national Democratic leadership and progressive politics coming from Washington.

Trump’s endorsement looms over race

President Donald Trump also remains central to the entire contest after his late endorsement of Paxton became one of the biggest developments of the Republican primary.

Many Senate Republicans reportedly opposed Trump backing Paxton over longtime Senator John Cornyn, worrying the controversial attorney general could become vulnerable in a general election.

Still, Paxton made clear Tuesday night that he views Trump’s support as one of the biggest reasons for his victory.

“When everyone in Washington told him to abandon me and abandon the people of Texas, he didn’t listen,” Paxton said while discussing Trump’s endorsement.

“Instead, he gave his complete and total endorsement. President Trump is the leader of our party, and his endorsement is the most powerful force in politics.”

That message reflects how heavily Paxton continues relying on Trump’s popularity with conservative voters across Texas.

For Democrats, however, Trump’s involvement may also provide an opening. Talarico and his allies appear eager to connect Paxton directly to broader national Republican controversies heading into the general election.

The race now moves forward with both candidates already drawing sharp lines only minutes after the runoff ended. And if Tuesday night offered any preview, Texas voters are heading toward an exceptionally bitter Senate showdown where personal attacks, corruption accusations, and national political fights are likely to dominate nearly every stage of the campaign.
