Texas resident claims more than $4.4 million after matching every number in Powerball drawing

Austin, Texas – A Texas resident who stopped for a morning coffee ended up walking away with a life-changing lottery prize after purchasing a Powerball ticket that matched every number drawn in the May 2 jackpot drawing.

The winner, a resident of Leander who chose to remain anonymous, claimed half of the estimated $20 million annuitized Powerball Grand Prize after sharing the jackpot with another winning ticket sold in Florida.

The lucky Quick Pick ticket was purchased at QuikTrip #4165, located on East Crystal Falls Parkway in Leander. The ticket matched all six winning numbers drawn on May 2: 25, 37, 42, 52, 65, and Powerball 14.

Because two jackpot-winning tickets were sold for the same drawing, the prize was split between the Texas winner and a player in Florida.

After selecting the cash value option when the ticket was purchased, the Texas winner received $4,488,330.34 before taxes.

Coffee Stop Turns Into Multi Million Dollar Surprise

The winner said buying the ticket was not part of a regular routine.

“I’m not a regular lottery player, but I saw on a billboard that there had recently been a big jackpot, so the next morning when I stopped in at QuikTrip for a coffee, I bought a Powerball ticket,” said the claimant.

Several days later, the ticket was still sitting in the winner’s wallet while the couple was out running errands.

The winner explained that the intention was simply to check the ticket before throwing it away.

“A few days later we were out running errands when I noticed the ticket in my wallet and I thought to myself, ‘I need to check that so I can toss it’. Only, this time when I checked it, I saw that I’d won. I was stunned. When my [spouse] returned to the car [they] asked me, ‘Are you okay?’ and I told [them], ‘I think we’ve won the lottery.’”

The winner said the spouse initially believed the reaction was an overstatement. To make sure there was no mistake, the couple checked the numbers multiple times.

According to the claimant, they reviewed the ticket three more times before returning home and placing it in a safe.

“We’re planning to save the money for the time being until we decide what we want to do with it.”

Another Milestone Win

The winning retailer may also receive a significant reward. Under the Texas Lottery Retailer Bonus Program, QuikTrip #4165 could be eligible for a $250,000 bonus for selling the jackpot-winning ticket.

Lottery officials noted that this marks the fourth Powerball jackpot winner ever claimed by a Texas Lottery player.

It is also the first Powerball Grand Prize winner from Texas since September 2025, when the Seven Bridges Revocable Trust of Fredericksburg claimed a share of a massive $1.8 billion jackpot.

The latest win continues a notable streak for the Texas Lottery. Officials said Texas has now produced at least one Powerball or Mega Millions jackpot winner during each of the last four calendar years.

Texas joined the multistate Powerball game in 2010. Its first Powerball jackpot winner arrived in 2013 when Paul McDowell of Bells claimed a $40 million jackpot from the May 29 drawing that year.

The May 2 jackpot victory came immediately after another major Powerball win. In the April 29 drawing, two tickets sold outside Texas shared a $143 million jackpot.

Powerball jackpots begin at $20 million and continue growing until someone matches all five white ball numbers and the Powerball. Players can also purchase the Power Play option for an additional dollar, allowing many non-jackpot prizes to be multiplied.

Powerball drawings are held every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 10:12 p.m. Central Time. Tickets are sold through more than 19,000 Texas Lottery retailers statewide, with sales ending at 9 p.m. on drawing nights.

For one Leander resident, a simple coffee stop and an impulse lottery purchase turned into a multimillion-dollar surprise that neither they nor their spouse will soon forget.
