City of Fort Worth receives major grant to expand affordable housing access and improve housing strategies

Fort Worth, Texas – In an effort to combat its growing affordable housing challenges, the City of Fort Worth has received a $5 million PRO-Housing (Pathways to Reducing Obstacles to Affordable Housing) grant. This federal funding will help the city strengthen its housing policy framework, improve its existing strategies, and boost the production and preservation of affordable homes.

Fort Worth is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, drawing in new residents through a strong job market and expanding industries. However, this rapid growth has made it increasingly difficult for many families to find affordable housing, especially in popular neighborhoods. The rising demand has led to higher prices, placing pressure on lower-income areas and risking the displacement of longtime residents. For many households, the cost of housing is outpacing their income, forcing them to make difficult trade-offs between rent and other basic needs.

To address this crisis, the City of Fort Worth has committed to ensuring that all residents can afford to live in safe, high-quality neighborhoods. As part of this effort, the city developed two guiding initiatives: the Neighborhood Conservation Plan, which seeks to enhance livability, safety, and access to opportunity in all communities, and the Housing Affordability Strategy, focused on increasing the range of housing options for people at all income levels.

The newly awarded $5 million PRO-Housing grant will support these initiatives by funding the development and evaluation of local housing policies, removing obstacles that limit affordable housing supply, and enhancing both new construction and long-term preservation. According to city leaders, “The goal is to identify and remove barriers to affordable housing production and preservation and lower housing costs.”

With this investment, Fort Worth is taking a proactive step to address its housing needs and ensure that future growth benefits all residents, not just those who can afford rising prices.
