City of Fort Worth expands outdoor swimming access through partnership with YMCA

Fort Worth, Texas – Fort Worth residents are now enjoying greater access to outdoor swimming thanks to an expanded partnership between the City of Fort Worth and the YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth. In addition to ongoing access to the William M. McDonald YMCA’s seasonal outdoor pool and water park, residents can now also use the Eastside YMCA’s outdoor pool — all without requiring a YMCA membership.

According to city officials, the move is designed to provide equitable opportunities for recreation and water safety. “This agreement allows residents the same hours and pricing as the City’s aquatic facilities,” city representatives said. “It also includes equal pricing for swim lessons.”

A Longstanding Partnership with Growing Impact

The City and the YMCA have built a collaborative relationship over the years, working together to develop and manage multiple facilities. Their shared goal has consistently been to expand community access to recreation and wellness programs. Among the joint efforts already in place are the YMCA Sports Complex, NorthPark YMCA, William M. McDonald YMCA, and Eastside YMCA.

Strong aquatics programs typically involve collaboration between different community organizations to ensure everyone has the chance to swim and learn water safety. Fort Worth’s partnership with the YMCA has become a key part of that strategy, helping to create new pathways for residents to enjoy healthy, active lifestyles — especially during the summer months when demand for outdoor water recreation surges.

City Investments Make It Possible

Two YMCA pool facilities are currently open to the public with the help of direct financial investments from the City:

  • The William M. McDonald YMCA pool was supported with a $2.3 million investment from the City. To keep it running, Fort Worth also provides an annual operating subsidy of $78,444 — which includes $66,444 for daily operations and $12,000 for maintenance costs.

  • The Eastside YMCA pool benefited from a $250,000 renovation contribution through the City’s Community Partnership Funds.

Because of these investments, Fort Worth residents can access both pools without needing to pay for a YMCA membership. Admission costs are the same or even less than fees at City-owned pools, ensuring affordability for families and individuals across the city.

Future Improvements in Progress

Looking ahead, the City is hoping to further expand access through a major proposal. The Fort Worth Park & Recreation Department (PARD) has proposed $5 million in the upcoming 2026 Bond Program to support improvements at the NorthPark YMCA. If voters approve the plan, the YMCA would match the investment with its own $5 million contribution. The resulting upgrades would open the NorthPark YMCA pool to all Fort Worth residents without a membership requirement, using the same affordable rate system as current City pools.

In addition to expanded aquatics access, the partnership is also exploring broader recreational programs. PARD and the YMCA are planning to launch joint initiatives that focus on therapeutic recreation, youth sports, development programs, and services tailored to senior citizens.

Through this growing collaboration, Fort Worth continues to show how strategic partnerships can build a healthier, more connected, and more inclusive community.
