Dallas Police Department launches one of the largest academy classes in its history

Dallas, Texas – The Dallas Police Department has officially welcomed Academy Class 408, marking a significant milestone in its ongoing effort to strengthen the city’s police force. With 77 officer trainees, including 75 new hires and 2 rehires, this class stands as the second-largest in department history, trailing only Class 368 in 2019, which had 82 recruits.

More than just a number, Class 408 reflects progress in several key areas, including gender diversity and veteran representation. Of the 77 trainees, 20 are female, making it the second most female-inclusive academy class Dallas Police has ever hosted. The department continues to push toward inclusivity and representation that mirrors the community it serves.

“I am proud of the department’s efforts to attract recruits that represent a cross section of the community,” said Dallas City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert. “This is an important step toward meeting our police hiring goals and honoring public safety as one of our residents’ top priorities.”

Veterans Add Strength and Experience

Among the incoming class are individuals with impressive backgrounds, including six former U.S. Marines and four former members of the U.S. Army. These veterans bring a wealth of experience, discipline, and leadership that will be invaluable as they transition into public service roles within the city.

The ten-month training program will prepare recruits to take on the demands of modern policing while reinforcing the department’s values of integrity, community partnership, and excellence.

Hiring Milestones Reflect Department Momentum

Class 408 is not the only cause for celebration. The department is also recognizing hiring progress during the 2024–2025 fiscal year. So far, 329 applicants have been hired, including eight officers who previously served with other agencies and have now returned to Dallas to continue their service.

“Our team exceeded our hiring goal to close out this fiscal year because people around the country, and around the world want to come to work for the most proactive police department in America,” said Dallas Police Chief Daniel C. Comeaux. “We’re making Dallas the safest big city and these recruits want to help make that happen.”

Looking Ahead to a Safer Future

With a class that showcases both diversity and dedication, leadership at the Dallas Police Department expressed strong confidence in the future of the city’s law enforcement efforts. The new officers are expected to help strengthen community engagement, enhance public safety, and contribute to making Dallas a model for urban policing.

As the 77 officer trainees begin their ten months of rigorous training, the department looks forward to the positive impact they will have on Dallas neighborhoods for years to come.
