The event will take place at the Shops at Clearfork, where participants can register beginning at 8 a.m. Opening ceremonies are set to begin at 9 a.m., followed by activities that are open to the public. Those attending can choose between a two-mile run or a one-mile ruck or walk, making the event accessible for people of different fitness levels.
Community event supports Special Olympics mission
The Torch Run is one of several ways the Fort Worth Police Department supports Special Olympics Texas throughout the year. Other efforts include fundraising activities such as Tip-A-Cop events at Texas Roadhouse and Polar Plunge events. However, the Torch Run stands out as a signature event that brings officers and community members together in a shared effort.
Participants not only take part in a physical activity but also contribute to a broader mission that supports athletes with intellectual disabilities. Funds raised help provide training, competitions, and opportunities for athletes across the state.
The Torch Run has a long history that stretches back decades. It was first created in 1981 by Wichita Police Chief Richard LaMunyon as a way for law enforcement to become more involved in community outreach while supporting Special Olympics Kansas. Just two years later, the program gained national recognition when it was presented to the International Association of Chiefs of Police, which officially endorsed it as its “Founding Law Enforcement Organization.”
A global movement built on unity and support
Since its early beginnings, the Law Enforcement Torch Run has grown into a global movement. Law enforcement officers and Special Olympics athletes, often referred to as Guardians of the Flame, carry the “Flame of Hope” into opening ceremonies at events around the world. This includes local competitions as well as state, national, and even world-level games.
Today, more than 97,000 law enforcement members take part in carrying the flame each year. The symbol represents courage, inclusion, and the celebration of diversity, bringing people together from all walks of life.
Over time, the impact of the program has been significant. Since its creation, the Torch Run has raised more than $600 million for Special Olympics programs, helping to expand opportunities for athletes worldwide.
The Fort Worth Police Department encourages residents to join the event, whether by running, walking, or volunteering. Those interested can sign up to be part of the team or reach out for more information about volunteer opportunities as the city prepares for another year of community engagement and support.
