Garland prepares to update its “Garland Forward” plan, inviting community feedback to shape the city’s future

Garland, Texas – Aimed for guiding the city’s growth over the next decades, Garland is prepared for a transforming update to its “Garland Forward,” comprehensive plan. This proposal aims to use community feedback to shape Garland’s future in line with its expanding needs and ambitions.

From economic development to environmental sustainability, city officials have opened various paths for local involvement, essential for a strategy that claims to touch on all aspects of urban life. Residents are encouraged to share their opinions online on the Garland Forward website. These direct and instantaneous comments will enable the project priorities to be guided in line with the urgent demands of the community.

Apart from the online poll, the city plans other pop-up activities to enable more general community involvement. These events are set for Tuesday, September 10, with the first session happening from 10 to 11 a.m. at local spots like Starbucks on Lavon Drive and La Mejor Panaderia on S. First St. Extra events later that day will take place at the Downtown Square and another Starbucks on Broadway Blvd. These pop-ups offer a laid-back setting where neighbors may express their ideas and gain knowledge about the planning initiatives.

Planned for the evening of Wednesday, September 11, at The Atrium at the Granville Arts Center, the Community Kickoff Event will be a turning point in this comprehensive planning process. The program will include a quick lecture followed by interactive exercises letting participants explore multiple aspects of the agenda at their own pace.

Garland Forward will cover a broad spectrum of issues vital to the development and sustainability of the city. These include changing land use rules, growing parks and open areas, and improving local vibrancy. To fit Garland’s expanding population, special focus will also be on transportation and infrastructure developments.

The legislative need of updating Garland’s comprehensive plan arises from the need of freshness for the present plan, “Envision Garland,” established in 2012, to remain relevant with the city’s dynamic developments. With the planning, engineering, and community involvement firm Verduity leading the project, Garland Forward’s financing came from the 2023–24 fiscal year budget.

By matching with other previously enacted master plans including the Economic Development Strategic Plan and the Trails & Bikeways Master Plan, Garland Forward not only addresses social and economic aspects but also plans for the physical growth of the city.
