Fort Worth secures major funding to enhance community park and zoo facilities

Fort Worth, Texas – The City of Fort Worth Park & Recreation Department has secured two significant grants from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD). These funds will bring major improvements to Oak Grove Community Park and the Fort Worth Zoo, reinforcing the city’s commitment to enhancing public spaces and promoting conservation education.

Oak Grove Community Park to See Transformative Upgrades

One of the grants will fund the development of Oak Grove Community Park, a 67.39-acre urban green space in southeast Fort Worth. The city has already allocated $3 million from the 2022 Bond funds, along with an additional $560,000 from park dedication fees, to support master planning, design, and phase one development. With an extra $1.5 million from TPWD, the park will see the completion of an 8-foot-wide trail loop that will connect its northern and southern sections.

This trail will provide residents with better accessibility and expanded recreational opportunities. Other planned improvements may include new tennis and pickleball courts, a shaded playground, seating areas, and additional native landscaping to enhance the park’s natural beauty and ecological value.

Fort Worth Zoo Hall of Wonders to Receive Modern Upgrades

The second grant will go toward renovating the Hall of Wonders (HOW) within the Texas Wild! section of the Fort Worth Zoo. Since its opening in 2001, the HOW has educated millions of visitors on conservation efforts and Texas’ rich biodiversity. With TPWD’s $2 million grant, the facility will be redesigned to feature interactive displays that tackle pressing environmental issues such as water conservation, invasive species management, habitat protection, and energy sustainability.

These updates will provide an engaging and educational experience for visitors of all ages, fostering a greater understanding of stewardship and responsible environmental practices. The revamped Hall of Wonders aims to inspire visitors to take an active role in preserving Texas’ natural heritage for future generations.

Officials Praise the Strong Partnership

City officials are enthusiastic about the positive impact these grants will have on Fort Worth’s parks and conservation initiatives. Richard Zavala, director of Fort Worth Park & Recreation, expressed appreciation for the collaboration with TPWD and the Fort Worth Zoological Association.

“These projects highlight the strong partnership between the City of Fort Worth, Fort Worth Zoological Association, and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department,” Zavala said. “We are grateful for their continued support as we work together to create spaces that inspire, educate, and connect our community.”

With these new improvements, residents and visitors alike can look forward to enhanced recreational and educational experiences in Fort Worth’s parks and zoo facilities.
