Texas Lottery joins nationwide initiative to help prevent gambling addiction and encourage responsible play

Austin, Texas – Gambling can be an exciting form of entertainment for many adults, but it also comes with risks that should not be ignored. In recognition of Problem Gambling Awareness Month (PGAM), the Texas Lottery is once again reinforcing its commitment to responsible gaming practices throughout the month of March. This nationwide initiative, led by the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG), brings together public health organizations, gaming operators, and advocacy groups to raise awareness about the dangers of problem gambling and the resources available to those affected.
Shining a Light on Gambling Addiction
The theme for this year’s PGAM campaign focuses on increasing awareness of gambling addiction as a serious mental health condition. Many people misunderstand the nature of problem gambling, which can deeply impact personal relationships, family stability, and financial well-being. By fostering greater awareness and empathy, PGAM aims to break down barriers to treatment and ensure that individuals and families struggling with gambling-related harm receive the support they need.
“For more than 30 years, responsible gambling has been a fundamental focus for the Texas Lottery,” said Ryan Mindell, Executive Director of the Texas Lottery. “By working alongside NCPG and our network of retail partners throughout the year and particularly during Problem Gambling Awareness Month, we can help connect players with valuable resources and services. Lottery games are designed to be a source of entertainment while generating vital funding for public education and veterans’ services in Texas. We encourage all players to keep their gaming experiences positive by setting personal limits on time and spending.”
Understanding the Scope of Problem Gambling
While most adults gamble responsibly, problem gambling remains a widespread issue. According to NCPG, an estimated 2.5 million U.S. adults (1%) meet the criteria for a severe gambling disorder, while another 5-8 million (2-3%) experience mild to moderate gambling problems. Problem gambling behaviors can manifest in many ways, including:
- Chasing losses by gambling more to recover money
- Spending excessive time or money on gambling despite negative consequences
- Lying to family or friends about gambling habits
- Borrowing or stealing money to continue gambling
- Struggling to stop or control gambling behavior
Recognizing these warning signs is crucial in ensuring that individuals seek help and intervention before gambling problems escalate.
How the Texas Lottery Promotes Responsible Play
The Texas Lottery has been recognized by NCPG, the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries, and the World Lottery Association for its commitment to responsible gaming practices. The organization integrates responsible play messaging year-round into its marketing and communication efforts.
Key measures include:
- Ensuring all lottery players are at least 18 years old through in-store signage, retailer training, and age verification at vending machines
- Training more than 20,000 retailers statewide to prevent the sale and redemption of lottery tickets to minors
- Providing players with access to responsible gambling tools and educational materials through the Texas Lottery’s website
- Featuring “PLAY RESPONSIBLY” and “Must be 18 or older to purchase a ticket” messages on all lottery tickets and advertisements
Additionally, Texas Lottery retailers and employees receive ongoing training on responsible gambling awareness. Educational resources such as training videos, positive play brochures, and in-store messaging ensure that both retailers and players remain informed about responsible gambling habits.
Engaging the Community Through Awareness and Support
Throughout March, the 2025 PGAM campaign will be highlighted in weekly communications to employees and retailers, digital advertisements, and in-store messaging. The Texas Lottery will also amplify awareness efforts across social media platforms and its website, encouraging players and partners to engage with the campaign using the hashtag #PGAM2025.
