Fort Worth urges residents to keep yard waste out of garbage and recycle bins this spring

Fort Worth, Texas – With spring in full bloom, the season of renewal brings not only the urge to clean inside but also to spruce up the outdoors. As homeowners clear brush, rake leaves, and trim trees, the City of Fort Worth is reminding everyone to properly dispose of yard waste—not by tossing it into the garbage or recycling carts, but by using designated disposal methods.

Why Responsible Disposal Matters

Proper yard waste management plays a key role in reducing landfill overflow, limiting greenhouse gas emissions, and protecting native ecosystems. Mixing yard waste with regular trash can contaminate recyclables, slow down processing, and increase environmental harm. That’s why the City is encouraging residents to follow simple, eco-conscious steps.

Easy Ways to Dispose of Yard Waste

Fort Worth offers multiple options for getting rid of yard waste properly:

  • Green Yard Carts: Available for a one-time $75 fee, these 96-gallon carts can be filled with routine yard waste and placed at the curb for weekly collection.

  • Kraft Paper Bags: Residents can purchase these biodegradable bags from local hardware stores. Once filled with items like leaves, grass clippings, twigs, and brush, they should be folded closed and left curbside on collection day.

  • Larger Yard Debris: Oversized limbs and tree trunks can be stacked in separate yard waste piles, ensuring they are at least two feet apart from bulk waste piles to avoid confusion during pickup.

  • Drop-Off Stations: Yard waste can also be delivered to any of the City’s four designated drop-off locations.

Residents are reminded that the City cannot accept yard waste that contains rocks, trash, plastic bags, bottles, metal, or plant pot pieces.

To request a green yard cart or ask questions, contact the Fort Worth 311 Contact Center at 817-392-1234 or email [email protected].

With these simple steps, Fort Worth residents can help keep their yards — and the environment — clean and green this spring.
