TxDOT launches statewide effort to prevent alcohol- and drug-related crashes during busy summer travel season

Austin, Texas – As summer travel ramps up across Texas and major celebrations approach, state transportation officials are reminding drivers that the safest choice is to plan ahead and never get behind the wheel while impaired.

The Texas Department of Transportation is launching a renewed effort to combat impaired driving through its Drive Sober. No Regrets. campaign. Officials say the message is especially important as Texans prepare for busy summer road travel, Independence Day festivities, and upcoming World Cup events that are expected to bring increased traffic and gatherings throughout the state.

According to state officials, driving after consuming alcohol, using THC, or combining multiple substances creates serious risks not only for the driver but for everyone sharing the road.

Last year alone, 1,254 people lost their lives in impaired-driving crashes across Texas. That translates to roughly three deaths every day linked to drivers who were under the influence.

Transportation officials also warned that combining alcohol and THC significantly increases danger. Data cited by the agency indicates that drivers who use both substances are 25 times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash.

Campaign focuses on prevention and education

TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams stressed that there is no acceptable level of impaired driving.

“There is no safe level of impaired driving,” said Williams. “Avoiding a crash or arrest doesn’t make the choice any less dangerous. The risk is real and the consequences can be permanent. Avoid the ‘what ifs’ and always drive sober.”

Officials emphasized that deadly crashes are not the only consequence associated with impaired driving. A driving while intoxicated conviction can lead to lengthy legal proceedings along with fines and fees that can total as much as $17,000.

As part of the campaign, the Texas Department of Transportation will travel throughout the state with a former beverage delivery truck that has been converted into a mobile educational exhibit.

The specially outfitted vehicle will feature interactive displays and activities designed to teach participants about the dangers and consequences of impaired driving. The goal is to encourage drivers to make safe decisions before heading out to social gatherings, celebrations, or sporting events.

Increased law enforcement planned through early July

The campaign coincides with a national effort led by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration aimed at reducing impaired driving during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

From June 19 through July 6, law enforcement agencies across Texas will increase patrols and focus on identifying impaired drivers. The enhanced enforcement period is intended to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities linked to alcohol and drug impairment.

State officials say planning a sober ride home, using a designated driver, arranging a rideshare, or finding another safe transportation option can prevent tragedies before they happen.

The Drive Sober. No Regrets. campaign is part of TxDOT’s broader Drive like a Texan: Kind. Courteous. Safe. initiative. The program encourages motorists to take pride in responsible driving and to look out for one another while traveling Texas roads.

With thousands of families expected to travel and celebrate during the coming weeks, transportation officials hope the campaign’s message will resonate with drivers and help save lives. Their message is simple: make a plan, drive sober, and help keep Texas roads safe for everyone.
