Fort Worth authorities provide safety tips and warning against fraudulent calls

Fort Worth, Texas – Authorities in Fort Worth are alerting residents about an ongoing phone scam where fraudsters impersonate law enforcement officers, demanding payments for alleged legal fees to clear fake warrants. These scammers are using scare tactics and aggressive language to pressure victims into compliance, making it critical for residents to remain vigilant.

Fraudulent Calls Targeting Fort Worth Residents

The Fort Worth Municipal Court has clarified that these scam calls are fraudulent and do not originate from their office. “Fort Worth is a Safe Harbor Court, meaning residents can always visit a Fort Worth Municipal Court location without fear of arrest for outstanding warrants issued by the Fort Worth Municipal Court,” said Director William Rumuly.

Court staff will never call individuals to demand payments over the phone. Additionally, people who voluntarily appear in court for Class C warrants are not arrested.

How Scammers Operate

Fraudsters often pretend to be government officials to gain credibility and manipulate victims. Common tactics include:

  • Scare Tactics: Claiming a loved one is in danger or threatening imminent arrest unless immediate action is taken.
  • Demanding Unusual Payment Methods: Requesting money transfers, cryptocurrency, or gift cards to settle alleged fees.
  • Creating Urgency: Pressuring victims to act immediately.
  • Jury Duty Scams: Claiming fees for missed jury service. The court emphasizes there is no cost to reset a jury service date. In case of emergencies, residents should call 817-392-7633 or email the court for assistance.

If you receive such calls, do not comply. Instead, contact the Fort Worth Municipal Court directly at 817-392-6700, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For general concerns about suspicious activity, reach out to the Fort Worth Police Department’s nonemergency number at 817-392-4222.
