Texas officials launch campaign to reduce rising pedestrian and cyclist fatalities

Austin, Texas – The number of pedestrian and cyclist deaths in Texas continues to rise at an alarming rate. In 2023, a total of 914 pedestrians and bicyclists lost their lives in traffic crashes across the state. Since 2019, pedestrian deaths have surged by 22%, while cyclist fatalities have spiked by 58%. To combat this growing issue, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has launched its Be Safe. Drive Smart. campaign this spring, reinforcing the need for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists to follow traffic laws and share the road responsibly.
Raising Awareness to Prevent Tragedies
The Be Safe. Drive Smart. campaign is an initiative that aims to reduce accidents by increasing awareness about traffic laws and safe road practices.
“Pedestrians and cyclists are among our most at-risk road users, and too many of them are killed or injured in our communities each year,” said TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams. “If everyone looks out for each other and follows the rules of the road, we can help prevent these terrible crashes.”
As part of the campaign, teams of walking billboards will travel throughout high-risk areas across Texas, delivering essential safety reminders to drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists. This direct approach is intended to make an immediate impact by reaching those who are most affected.
Simple Steps to Make Roads Safer
Everyone who uses Texas roads plays a role in preventing accidents. TxDOT is urging drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists to take these precautions:
For Drivers:
- Stop and yield for pedestrians, bicyclists, and other vulnerable road users in crosswalks.
- Give bicycles space and pass at a safe distance.
- Yield when turning and always check for pedestrians and cyclists.
- Follow posted speed limits and adjust for road conditions.
For Pedestrians:
- Always use crosswalks and obey traffic signals.
- Walk on sidewalks whenever possible. If none exist, walk facing oncoming traffic on the left side unless it is unsafe or obstructed.
For Cyclists:
- Obey all traffic laws, including stopping at red lights and stop signs.
- Ride in the same direction as traffic, using bike lanes when available. Otherwise, ride as close as possible to the right-hand curb.
- Use hand signals to indicate turns or stops.
- Equip bicycles with proper lighting at night: a white light in front and a red light or reflector in the back.
A Broader Initiative to Improve Road Safety
The Be Safe. Drive Smart. campaign is a key component of TxDOT’s Drive Like a Texan: Kind. Courteous. Safe. initiative, which promotes responsibility, awareness, and respect on the roads. Through education and community engagement, TxDOT hopes to shift driving culture toward safer, more thoughtful choices.
By following these simple but lifesaving practices, Texas drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists can work together to reduce the risk of preventable tragedies. Learn more about the campaign and road safety initiatives at DriveLikeATexan.com.
