Texas launches awareness campaign urging drivers to avoid distractions as distracted driving remains a major cause of crashes

Austin, Texas – Drivers across Texas are being urged to rethink their habits behind the wheel as state officials highlight the serious and often deadly consequences of distracted driving. The message is simple but urgent, reminding motorists that whatever is happening on a phone can never outweigh the importance of what is happening on the road ahead.
The Texas Department of Transportation is using this moment to bring attention to a growing concern that continues to impact thousands of lives each year. Distracted driving has become one of the leading causes of crashes across the state, placing drivers, passengers, and pedestrians at risk every single day.
“Whatever’s on the phone, it can’t be as important as what’s in front of you on the road. Pay attention behind the wheel — it can save a life.”
The deadly reality behind distractions
Recent data shows just how widespread and dangerous the issue has become. Distracted driving was the second most common factor in Texas traffic crashes last year, contributing to more than 86,000 incidents. These numbers reflect not just statistics, but real moments where attention slipped and lives were forever changed.
Even small actions can lead to devastating results. Taking a quick glance at a phone, adjusting a music playlist, checking navigation, or even eating while driving can all count as distractions. Each second spent looking away from the road reduces reaction time and increases the risk of a crash.
“When you’re behind the wheel, you should be completely focused on just one thing: driving,” said TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams. “Road hazards and obstacles require quick thinking and reaction time, and just a few seconds can be the difference between life and death. I promise that text message or bite of food can wait.”
Officials stress that many drivers underestimate how quickly danger can appear. A sudden stop, an unexpected obstacle, or another driver’s mistake can happen in an instant, and any distraction can prevent a driver from reacting in time.
Awareness efforts and simple steps to stay safe
April has been recognized as Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and TxDOT is stepping up efforts to educate drivers across the state. Campaigns include commercials, billboards, and even a mobile exhibit that features a driving simulator designed to show just how dangerous distractions can be in real time.
The agency is also reminding drivers about the legal risks tied to distracted driving. Texas law clearly prohibits texting while driving, and those caught reading, writing, or sending messages behind the wheel can face fines of up to 200 dollars.
Alongside enforcement, officials are encouraging simple actions that can make a major difference. Drivers are advised to keep both hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road at all times. Placing a phone out of reach or using settings that block calls and texts while driving can help remove temptation. If a message or call cannot wait, the safest option is to pull over completely before using a device.
The campaign also ties into a broader safety message through the Talk, Text, Crash effort, which is part of the Drive Like a Texan: Kind, Courteous, Safe initiative. This effort encourages drivers to take pride in safe driving habits and to look out for others on the road.
State officials say that preventing distracted driving is not just about avoiding tickets or fines, but about protecting lives. Every choice made behind the wheel carries weight, and even a brief distraction can have lasting consequences. By staying focused and making safer decisions, drivers can help create roads that are safer for everyone.
